Wildfire in Vouzela, Portugal, spreads to five fronts, injures at least seven
A wildfire that ignited early Thursday in Vouzela, central Portugal, has grown to five active fronts, spread to two neighboring districts, and injured at least seven people, as over 1,200 emergency personnel battle the blaze amid strong winds and a heatwave.
Fire progression and spread
The fire started at 03:04 on July 2 in Tourelhe, in the parish of Cambra, Vouzela, in the Viseu district. By late afternoon it had two active fronts burning intensely, driven by strong winds. By 21:45, one front had crossed into the neighboring municipality of Oliveira de Frades, approaching the Campia industrial zone. Overnight, the fire spread further, reaching the Aveiro district and the municipality of Águeda. By the morning of July 3, the fire had five active fronts and was threatening homes, according to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC).

Casualties and damage
At least seven people have been injured, including six firefighters and one civilian, according to civil protection sources. One civilian suffered burns and was taken to hospital. The fire has destroyed a firefighting vehicle and several agricultural annexes, and caused damage to some homes. The Vouga railway line between Mourisca do Vouga and Águeda has been cut. No mandatory evacuations have been ordered, but some residents have left their homes voluntarily.
There are nearby villages, but for now they will only be protected, and the evacuation of populations is not being considered at this moment.
Response and resources
By 07:30 on July 3, 885 operacionais were deployed specifically to the Vouzela fire, supported by 276 ground vehicles and one aircraft. Across the four largest active fires in the country, over 1,200 personnel were mobilized. ANEPC said that aerial resources would be reinforced. The fire is burning in the same area that was devastated by wildfires in 2017, but moving in the opposite direction.

Weather and challenges
Strong winds and high temperatures have been the main obstacles. The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) extended a red alert for heat to 10 districts until Sunday. Commander Francisco Lima said the wind and long-range projections made the fire "very erratic."
What most hinders the fight is the strong wind and the projections.
Infrastructure and community impact
The fire's proximity to the A25 motorway near the Vouzela/São Pedro do Sul junction raised concerns about traffic safety. Authorities said they might impose restrictions or temporarily close the road if necessary. In Águeda, the fire affected isolated populations, requiring a major effort to protect property, according to commander António Ribeiro.
Given the atmospheric and meteorological conditions of the day and very strong winds, the fire has been affecting the entire municipality of Águeda, from the most mountainous part to almost the urban area of the city.
