Mario Voigt wins re-election as Thuringia CDU leader with 82.4% ahead of no-confidence vote
Thuringia Minister-President Mario Voigt won 82.4% of the vote at a party congress in Eisenach to remain CDU state leader, days before facing an AfD-led motion of no confidence in the state parliament.
Party backing in Eisenach
At a state party congress held in Eisenach, Thuringia Minister-President Mario Voigt secured re-election as chairman of the regional Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Voigt has led the CDU in Thuringia since 2022 and has served as minister-president since 2024. Running without an opposing candidate, the 49-year-old state leader won 82.4% of the cast delegate votes. The outcome marks a slight decline from his first election to the post in 2022, when he secured 84.6% of the vote. Addressing the assembly before the ballot, Voigt urged delegates to display internal cohesion.

Doctorate revocation and internal dilemma
Voigt has faced political pressure following the revocation of his doctoral degree, a decision that stood after the Chemnitz University of Technology (TU Chemnitz) rejected his formal appeal. During his speech in Eisenach, Voigt directly acknowledged the unease within party ranks regarding the controversy. He described his position as a personal dilemma, balancing his defense of his academic dissertation against the certainty that political opponents would exploit the matter. Party delegates greeted his speech, which portrayed the state administration as a practical problem solver and the CDU as a constructive force, with several minutes of applause.
I know that this concerns you.
Far-right motion of no confidence
The party endorsement precedes a confrontation scheduled for the coming Friday in the Thuringian state parliament (Landtag). The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) parliamentary group has introduced a motion of no confidence against Voigt, the second such attempt to remove him from office in 2026. AfD parliamentary group leader Björn Höcke cited the doctorate controversy to accuse the minister-president of lacking moral integrity. Höcke announced plans to stand personally as a candidate for minister-president during the vote. In response, Voigt used his convention speech to reject the challenge and warn against regional instability.
We will not let Thuringia fall into chaos.

Coalition fragility and BSW dispute
The controversy around the head of government has deepened tensions within Thuringia's governing alliance between the CDU, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The coalition controls 44 of the 88 seats in the state parliament, lacking an outright majority and relying on compromises with the opposition Left party (Die Linke) to resolve legislative deadlocks. The BSW federal leadership demanded that its Thuringian state branch leave the coalition and withdraw backing for Voigt. However, the BSW state parliamentary group and state executive board rejected the federal order by a wide majority, voting instead to convene an extraordinary special party congress.
