Silvia Uscov resigns from AUR, declares party no longer shares her values
Lawyer Silvia Uscov announced her resignation from the Alliance for the Union of Romanians on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences with the party's direction and its push for early elections.
Resignation announced
Silvia Uscov, a lawyer who joined the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) in June 2025, published her resignation on Facebook late Sunday night. She framed the move as a principled stand, writing that she had entered the party in good faith to promote democracy, fundamental rights, and the national interest.
I publicly announce my resignation from the AUR party. I entered this party in good faith, to fight for democracy, the defence of fundamental rights and freedoms, and the national interest.
The post, picked up by multiple Romanian outlets on Monday morning, marked the end of a relationship that had shown strain for months.
Values gap and a previous exit attempt
Uscov made clear that her decision turned on a basic values mismatch. She acknowledged respect for some individuals inside AUR but said the party overall no longer represented what she had signed up for.
Unfortunately, I discovered that we are not animated by the same values, although I bear respect for a few special people in this party, and whom I thought of when I returned after the first attempt to leave the party on March 1, 2026.
That first resignation attempt was withdrawn after internal discussions, but the underlying tensions persisted and deepened over the spring.
Opposition to early elections
In the days preceding her resignation, Uscov publicly broke with AUR leader George Simion over the party’s call for early parliamentary elections. She described the idea as the “nuclear option” and warned of unpredictable economic consequences.
Talk of early elections, the nuclear option, is a legitimate discussion. But before pushing things one way or another, it is worth understanding concretely what is at stake, not at the level of parties, but at the level of each of our wallets.
Her stance directly contradicted the party line, and several reports noted that she had also urged AUR to support the Veștea government rather than precipitate a snap vote.
Legal profile and Constitutional Court challenges
Uscov gained public attention last winter when she challenged the appointment of two judges, Dacian Dragoș and Mihai Busuioc, to the Constitutional Court of Romania. She argued that the decrees violated statutory seniority requirements. Both challenges were dismissed by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, but they established her as a politically active lawyer willing to take on institutional questions.
