Nirenberg stated that the Romanian capital received him and his family with open arms following his posting to the country earlier in the year. The ambassador expressed gratitude for their stay in Romania and offered formal wishes for the city's ongoing urban development, alongside a continuing partnership and friendship with the United States.

Heritage preservation and the 1459 charter

The historical anniversary derives from an official charter issued on 20 September 1459 by Vlad Țepeș, the ruler of Wallachia. The document concluded with a specific clause recording that it was written in the Citadel of Bucharest, verifying both the existence of the settlement and its active function as a princely residence. In his anniversary remarks, Nirenberg linked the municipal milestone to American support for Romanian historical sites. The ambassador shared a photograph from a family visit to the Stavropoleos Monastery, situated in the Old Town area of the capital. The religious site underwent conservation work backed by the United States Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP).

Nirenberg assumed his role as United States Ambassador to Romania in early March 2026. His diplomatic tenure follows more than four decades of experience in foreign policy and international trade law. He previously served 14 years in the United States Senate, working as chief of staff and legislative director for Senator Jesse Helms. Following his legislative career, Nirenberg entered the private sector as a partner at the law firms Patton Boggs LLP and Steptoe LLP. His diplomatic assignment takes place within the framework of joint security commitments, with Romania positioned as a key NATO ally on the alliance's eastern flank.
