US Army shuts down Europe-based drone battalion formed by 173rd Airborne Brigade

Acting Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve ordered the 600-soldier unit to return to conventional airborne infantry duties following two final exercises in Germany in August and September 2026.

Disbandment of European drone battalion

Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the acting chief of staff of the US Army, has directed a specialized European drone warfare battalion to end its unmanned systems program and return to standard infantry operations. The unit, which operates under the designation of the 3rd Battalion of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment and includes 600 soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, will revert to its traditional role as an airborne infantry formation. The reorganization follows leadership changes initiated after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ousted Gen. Randy George in April 2026. The battalion will finish two scheduled training exercises in Germany in August and September 2026 before transferring its tactical observations to the wider military.

Ukrainian training and experimental development

The US military formed the dedicated drone battalion in November 2025 to adapt to evolving unmanned tactics observed during the war between Russia and Ukraine. Prior to the formal unit creation, soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade designed and built attack models inside a first-person view drone laboratory at Caserma Del Din in Italy starting in May 2025. Its commander at the time, Col. Joshua Gaspard, noted that soldiers were enthusiastic about utilizing the technology after observing Ukrainian battlefield footage. A small group of American soldiers subsequently travelled to Kyiv to consult directly with Ukrainian drone operators. The unit also participated in exercises on NATO training grounds, where Ukrainian soldiers acting as a simulated opposing force defeated American troops in mock combat during spring 2026 drills.

Shift toward core infantry duties

The decision to phase out the specialized formation represents a broader "back-to-basics" directive overseen by LaNeve and supported by Pentagon leadership. Under Gen. George, military planners had expected to maintain the battalion as a permanent deployment force capable of dispatching wherever drone warfare capabilities were required. An Army spokesperson stated that the service remains dedicated to accelerating American military drone dominance for large-scale combat operations while refocusing the European unit on primary warfighting assignments.

U.S. Army forces must be prepared to overcome the most complex challenges our adversaries can impose and master an operational environment that looks fundamentally different from the battlefields of yesterday.

— Christopher LaNeve

Operational debate over unmanned tactics

The decision has prompted criticism from defense analysts who argue that ending the European drone experiment risks slowing military adaptation to modern combat conditions. Low-cost unmanned aerial systems have reshaped warfare across multiple theatres, including the Middle East, where Iranian Shahed drones struck bases, killed US service members, downed an Army helicopter, and forced the military to expend expensive surface-to-air interceptors. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted in March 2026 that five Middle Eastern and Gulf countries had received Ukrainian technical help to intercept Iranian drones, alongside requests from Western nations.

Ukraine has essentially revolutionized the close fight. Gen. George was starting to get that, and any setback in what he was doing would be deeply regretful and dangerous.

— Michael O'Hanlon

Following its final September 2026 field maneuvers in Germany, the battalion will complete its lessons-learned debriefing and resume conventional airborne infantry readiness.
