Spain beats Uruguay 1-0 as Muslera error sends two-time champions out of World Cup group stage
A soft shot from Alex Baena slipped through Fernando Muslera's gloves, handing Spain a 1-0 win against Uruguay and eliminating the two-time world champions from the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the group stage.
Group H decider
Spain and Uruguay entered the final Group H match on 27 June with contrasting paths to the knockout stage. Spain, after a shock 0-0 draw with debutants Cape Verde and a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, needed a point to top the group. Uruguay, carrying four World Cup stars on their shirt, had collected only two goalless draws and knew only a victory would guarantee survival. Both sides met in a tense, low-quality affair in the early hours of the morning.
Muslera’s costly moment
The match offered few clear chances until the closing minutes of the first half. In the 42nd minute, Marcos Llorente crossed from the right flank, Alex Baena controlled and turned, then fired a tame shot from about 13 metres. The ball flew centrally, and 40-year-old goalkeeper Fernando Muslera got both gloves to it but let it roll through and into the net. It was the goal that separated the sides.
A rare half-time substitution
Muslera’s error continued a torrid tournament for the veteran, who had also been at fault in Uruguay’s opening draw with Cape Verde. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa reacted decisively: Muslera did not return for the second half, replaced by Sergio Rochet. Only once before in World Cup history had a goalkeeper been substituted at the interval for non-injury reasons, when Bulgaria’s Boris Mikhailov left the pitch in 1994 after conceding four first-half goals.

Cape Verde’s fairytale
While Spain clung to their lead, the simultaneous match between Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia ended 0-0. That result lifted Cape Verde to three points from three draws, while Uruguay finished on two. Spain won the group with seven points without conceding a goal. Cape Verde, debutants with goalkeeper Vozinha between the posts, advanced to the round of 16 in second place. Uruguay, despite a pedigree that includes 15 Copa América titles and famous names like Federico Valverde and Darwin Núñez, exited the tournament without a single win.

Spain manages the game
Luis de la Fuente’s Spain deliberately slowed the tempo after the break, prioritising possession and denying Uruguay clear sights of goal. Ferran Torres came closest to extending the lead when he hit the crossbar late on. Uruguay’s frustration boiled over deep into added time when Agustín Canobbio launched a brutal tackle and received a straight red card in the 95th minute. The final whistle confirmed Spain as group winners, while Uruguay’s campaign ended in acrimony.
