Unitree shares rise over 600% in Shanghai debut after pricing IPO at 150.8 yuan
Chinese humanoid robot maker Unitree Robotics debuted on Shanghai's Star Market on Wednesday, opening at 1,100 yuan per share after pricing its initial public offering at 150.8 yuan.
Shanghai market debut
Chinese robotics manufacturer Unitree Robotics made its public trading debut on Shanghai's Star Market on Wednesday under ticker 688836.SS. The company, identified as the world's largest producer of humanoid robots, saw its shares open at 1,100 yuan ($163.14, or £120.60), climbing above its initial public offering price of 150.8 yuan ($22.36) per share. During early exchanges, the equity gained as much as 629% before easing back to trade approximately 578% higher than its issue price. The listing on the Star Market, a venue established for technology enterprises and widely described as China's Nasdaq, represents a central milestone for Beijing's official plans to develop the domestic robotics sector.

Valuation and investor demand
At its initial public offering price of 150.8 yuan per share, Unitree held a pre-trading valuation of approximately $9 billion. As trading commenced on Wednesday morning, the increase in share price briefly lifted the company's total market capitalisation above 400 billion yuan, or roughly $59 billion based on prevailing exchange rates. This rapid valuation gain placed the robotics manufacturer among the most valuable publicly traded companies in mainland China. Retail investor interest was heavy during the pre-listing phase, leaving the tranche of shares allocated to individual buyers more than 5,500 times oversubscribed. Unitree has built wide domestic brand recognition through televised public demonstrations, including performances where its robots completed dancing, flipping, and boxing routines at lunar new year galas. Everbright Securities International strategist Kenny Ng pointed to this public profile as a primary driver of the offering's reception.
This is partly due to Unitree's high brand recognition in mainland China.

Production metrics and trade restrictions
Commercial delivery figures indicate that Unitree shipped 5,500 humanoid robots over the course of last year. International commercial sales represent a substantial portion of the company's financial results, with overseas revenue accounting for more than 40% of its overall earnings. The United States market generates between 13.3% and 18.4% of total revenue depending on the specific year. This exposure to Western markets coincides with regulatory trade friction between Beijing and Washington. Last month, the US Federal Communications Commission introduced a ban on imports of humanoid robots, an administrative measure widely interpreted by market participants as directed at Chinese robotics hardware developers.
Global robotics competition
The Shanghai listing coincides with commercial competition between the United States and China to establish leadership in robotics and the artificial intelligence models that power autonomous machines. While earlier generations of automation, including automated industrial machinery and household vacuum cleaners, are already widely deployed in factories, distribution centres, and residential settings, bipedal humanoid robotics has attracted substantial global investment. Unitree now competes against established international technology and manufacturing corporations, including Tesla, Amazon, and Chinese automaker BYD, which are all actively developing two-legged machines capable of executing physical tasks traditionally performed by human workers.
