Two 23-year-olds die in head-on scooter crash on Elba, hours after ferry arrival
Nicolò Guazzelli and Gabriele Seragini, both 23 and from the Versilia coast, had just disembarked the ferry and rented a scooter before the collision near Portoferraio’s airport.
The crash
Around 19:00 on Friday 12 June, a rented scooter carrying two friends lost control on a bend along Via dell’Acquedotto, near the Portoferraio airport runway on the island of Elba. The scooter veered into the opposite lane and struck an oncoming car carrying a family of holidaymakers from Piedmont. According to the Carabinieri’s initial reconstruction, the driver lost control for reasons still under investigation.
The victims
Both riders died from their injuries. Nicolò Guazzelli, originally from Massa and living in Pietrasanta (Lucca), was pronounced dead at the scene. Gabriele Seragini, born and resident between Pietrasanta and Seravezza (Lucca), was taken in critical condition to the airport area for helicopter evacuation but died shortly after despite resuscitation efforts. The two had arrived on the island that afternoon, disembarked the ferry, and rented the scooter to begin a holiday together.
Emergency response
Multiple ambulances from the Misericordia, the Pubblica Assistenza and the Red Cross attended, along with the regional air ambulance Pegaso 3. Medical staff attempted prolonged resuscitation on the road before declaring both deaths. The injured occupants of the car were treated and taken to the emergency department in Portoferraio; their condition has not been disclosed.
The investigation
Carabinieri officers carried out surveys at the scene to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the collision. The bodies were moved to the Portoferraio mortuary and the families, who had been notified, were expected to arrive. The mayor of Campo nell’Elba visited the accident site shortly afterward.
Island in shock
The tragedy struck at the start of the summer season on a road that connects the port area to the popular resort of Marina di Campo. The two young men, from the Versilia coastal strip in Tuscany, had set off toward Campo nell’Elba when the crash happened in the opposite lane. No formal statement has yet been issued by the investigating magistrates.
