Two men arrested after apartment entrance bombing and car chase in Amaliada

Explosion at residential entrance
An improvised explosive and incendiary device detonated shortly after midnight on Sunday, 20 September 2026, at the entrance of an apartment building in the centre of Amaliada. The blast caused minor structural damage to the doorway and ignited a fire in the building's entrance area. Residents inside the property witnessed the flames leaping from the entrance, called emergency authorities, and extinguished the small blaze before the Fire Service arrived at the scene. Eyewitnesses in the immediate vicinity reported seeing an individual dressed in dark clothing and wearing a motorcycle helmet moving away from the building immediately following the detonation. Hellenic Police officers from the Ilida Crime Prosecution and Investigation Department and a mixed patrol unit quickly cordoned off the scene to search for the perpetrators.
Pursuit and vehicle interception
Patrolling police units operating across the surrounding district identified a vehicle carrying two men attempting to leave the area shortly after the detonation. When the driver noticed the approaching patrol car, he accelerated rapidly in an effort to evade inspection and break away through town roads. Officers initiated a pursuit that lasted several minutes before successfully cutting off the fleeing car and immobilizing it. The two occupants, identified as Greek citizens aged 21 and 24, were arrested on the spot without further resistance. Following the interception, police secured the vehicle and transported both men to the Ilida police station for processing.

Evidence recovery and legal charges
A forensic search conducted inside the intercepted vehicle yielded physical evidence tied directly to the incident. Officers discovered and confiscated a motorcycle helmet, a full-face balaclava, disposable gloves, a lighter, and the dark apparel used by the 21-year-old suspect to conceal his facial features. At the explosion site, crime scene specialists recovered scorched plastic bottle remnants and fragments of a detonated firecracker used to assemble the device. The Hellenic Police formed a criminal case file charging both suspects with explosion, arson, manufacture of explosive materials, and violations of Greek weapons laws. Both detainees were scheduled to appear before the Public Prosecutor of the First Instance Court of Elis to answer the charges.
Examination of earlier Savalia incident
Investigators are cross-referencing the case with an identical explosive attack that occurred in the nearby village of Savalia eight days earlier. In that previous incident, recorded shortly before midnight on Saturday, 12 September 2026, unidentified attackers hurled an explosive device into the courtyard of a private residence. The blast in Savalia triggered a minor fire that was extinguished immediately by homeowners before causing extensive damage. Authorities are comparing the physical components of both devices to determine whether the two suspects carried out both attacks in the Elis regional unit.
