Dispute over external production

The TVE News Council (Consejo de Informativos de TVE) formally rejected the decision to host Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on the morning magazine Mañaneros 360. The program is broadcast on La 1 and co-produced by the public corporation with commercial production firm La Cometa TV under the network's magazine programming division. Internal staff representatives stated that high-level political interviews must be produced exclusively by RTVE's internal News Services department rather than outside contractors. The council based its legal objection on Article 35.2 of the RTVE Framework Mandate (Mandato Marco), which establishes a requirement of 100% internal production for news programming, institutional content, and self-promotional material across public channels. RTVE corporate management declined to comment on the council's statement.

Council objections and editorial criticism

Staff representatives first learned about the interview during the second edition of the evening news bulletin (Telediario 2) on Monday, 7 September 2026. In an internal message sent to employees on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, the council stated that it remained unaware of who authorized placing the political interview with an outside production firm. The representative body requested that both the Spanish government and RTVE leadership reverse the broadcasting plan before Wednesday.

The live broadcast is scheduled for Wednesday, 9 September 2026, at 11:00 from the public broadcaster's Prado del Rey studios. The interview will air simultaneously on La 1 and the digital platform RTVE Play. Questioning will be led by Jesús Cintora, who co-presents Mañaneros 360 alongside Adela González following Javier Ruiz's departure to La Séptima. Cintora will be joined by Esther Palomera, who co-hosts the La 2 program Malas Lenguas with Gonzalo Miró. The broadcast is Sánchez's first television interview since the migration crisis in Ceuta, following a radio appearance one week earlier on Cadena SER with journalist Aimar Bretos. During the previous television season, Sánchez conducted his primary public broadcast appearance on the internally produced Telediario 2 with anchor Pepa Bueno.

Debate over newsroom outsourcing

The dispute between the News Council and network management follows months of internal friction regarding daytime programming strategy. Formats such as Mañaneros 360 and Malas Lenguas helped increase television audience figures for the public network over the past year. However, staff delegates maintain that assigning prime ministerial interviews to entertainment and daytime magazine divisions bypasses the statutory newsroom. The council insisted that political accountability interviews must remain under the direct control of public service staff, demanding that RTVE uphold standard newsroom production rules.
