Trump threatens prison for Reflecting Pool 'vandalism' as $14.7M renovation fails weeks after completion
Weeks after a $14.7 million renovation, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is plagued by algae and peeling paint. President Trump blames vandals, threatens 10-year prison terms, and orders the pool drained again.
Renovation and rapid deterioration
The Trump administration spent $14.7 million to recoat the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in an "American flag blue" finish ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations next month. Trump declared the project complete on June 6, but within weeks the water turned green with algae and the dark blue liner began peeling. On June 19, an approximately four-foot-square piece of the coating was seen floating in the pool; additional pieces were observed on June 22. The 2,000-foot-long (609-meter) pool, which sits between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, had been drained and repainted under a no-bid contract awarded to Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings.
Trump blames vandals, threatens prison
Trump has attributed the damage to "SICK, DERANGED PEOPLE!" without providing evidence. On Truth Social he claimed a "300 foot long gash" had been cut into the liner and that "chemicals have been illegally placed in the water." He later told reporters the pool would need to be drained to repair "two very small areas."
Of the MANY Statues and Fountains that we rebuilt, renovated, cleaned, and fixed, the only one that was Vandalized was the Reflecting Pool, which is being taken care of, ASAP!
Please remember that there is a 10 year prison sentence for the destruction, or even the attempted destruction, of such things - Which will be fully enforced!
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro echoed the prison threat over the weekend. Trump also said his administration was preparing lawsuits against ABC for what he called false reporting on the pool.
Arrests and patrols
At least five people were arrested for alleged vandalism and five others received federal citations, according to media reports citing an administration official. Among those detained was David Hearn, 67, a former Olympic canoe racer, who said he was held for five hours after briefly touching a peeling chunk of the liner.
I'm a curious citizen. I reached down to see what it felt like. It was very rubbery.
National Guard service members and U.S. Park Police have been patrolling the deck around the pool since the weekend. The Park Police have not disclosed the charges or the legal basis for the arrests.
Repair plans and warranty
DC Water issued a permit to drain the pool, and Atlantic Industrial Coatings said it would carry out repairs under warranty. The company stated that the affected areas represent "a very small part of the massive 7-acre project, and do not indicate a failure of the liner." The timeline for the new round of work remained unclear on Monday.

Political and public reaction
Images of the green-tinged water and peeling paint spread rapidly on social media, drawing crowds of onlookers to the National Mall. Critics have called the episode a metaphor for chaotic leadership and a wasteful extravagance, pointing to the no-bid contract and cost overruns at a time when many Americans are grappling with inflation. The pool, site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech, has become an unlikely political flashpoint weeks before the July 4 anniversary.
