Trump proposes replacing canceled 250th independence concerts with his own 'AMERICA IS BACK' rally, comparing himself to Elvis
Facing a wave of artist withdrawals from the US Semiquincentennial celebrations, President Donald Trump announced he is considering canceling the concerts and delivering a speech himself, comparing his drawing power to Elvis Presley.
Artist exodus over political tensions
Plans for a major musical celebration for the 250th anniversary of American independence suffered a significant setback after five of the nine originally announced artists withdrew, citing political tensions. The events, organized by the public-private partnership Freedom 250, are scheduled to take place on the National Mall in Washington between June 25 and July 10. Only four acts remain from the initial lineup: Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory, Flo Rida, and the surviving member of Milli Vanilli.
Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something far more controversial than what we agreed to participate in.
Rocker Bret Michaels and country music star Martina McBride announced their withdrawal on Friday, following similar decisions by the Commodores and two other groups earlier.
Trump's Truth Social counter-proposal
In a Saturday post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared he had ordered his representatives to examine the feasibility of replacing the concerts with an "AMERICA IS BACK Rally" on Wednesday in Washington, at the same time and location. The president stated that only "Great Patriots" would be invited, promising a "Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America."
I'm thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the world, the man who draws far bigger crowds than Elvis in his heyday, and does it without a guitar, the man who loves our country more than anyone else and the man some say is the greatest president in history. DONALD J. TRUMP, to take the place of these overpaid, third-rate 'artists' and deliver an important speech, rallying the country as I have done since I became president!
A lineup of past-their-prime acts
The original concert program, featuring artists whose peak popularity was in the last century, has drawn sarcastic commentary online. In a country that continues to produce some of the world's biggest international stars, the inclusion of rapper Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory, and the former duo Milli Vanilli — one of whose two members died in 1998 — sparked a wave of mocking social media posts.
Trump's imprint on the anniversary
Trump has clearly sought to leave his mark on the summer anniversary celebrations. Beyond the concert controversy, he has scheduled a mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament on the White House lawn on June 14, coinciding with his 80th birthday. It remains unclear whether Freedom 250 organizers will seek replacement artists or genuinely consider Trump's proposal to substitute the performances with a political rally.
