Texas Tech edges Houston in Big 12 opener

Defending Big 12 champion No. 13 Texas Tech opened conference play with a 28-26 victory over No. 22 Houston on Friday night in Lubbock before a sold-out crowd of 60,000. Houston erased an early deficit and had a chance to tie after Conner Weigman threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Overmyer with 49 seconds remaining. On the subsequent two-point conversion attempt, Weigman scrambled to his left and lunged toward the goal line, but Texas Tech linebacker Austin Romaine stopped him short, a call confirmed upon video review. Will Hammond completed 17 of 27 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown for Texas Tech, while receiver Kenny Johnson caught four passes for 113 yards and a score. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire noted the team's ability to pull through difficult situations.

In Winston-Salem, No. 5 Miami earned a 33-20 victory over Wake Forest as quarterback Darian Mensah set program marks and approached national passing standards. Mensah completed his first 24 passes, finishing 30 of 34 for 220 yards and three touchdowns. His 24 consecutive completions rank second in FBS single-game history behind Dominique Davis of East Carolina, who completed 26 in a row in 2011. The win marked the 100th career victory for Miami head coach Mario Cristobal. Meanwhile in Eugene, No. 21 Oregon established an Autzen Stadium single-game scoring record in an 84-0 shutout of Portland State, surpassing its previous facility record of 81 points set in 2023. The Ducks scored touchdowns on their first eight possessions, with quarterback Dante Moore throwing four touchdown passes.

Cincinnati stages 21-point rivalry comeback

In the 129th edition of the Battle for the Victory Bell at the home stadium of FC Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Bearcats erased a 21-point halftime deficit to defeat Miami (Ohio) 35-31. Miami led for nearly the entire contest after Scoop Smith opened the game with a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown. The Redhawks held a 28-7 advantage late in the second quarter following a 36-yard touchdown catch by Maleek Huggins. Cincinnati answered in the second half, scoring on four of five possessions. Cole Tabb provided the winning score on a 53-yard touchdown run on third-and-1 with 1:29 left. Antwan Peek Jr. sealed the victory on Miami's ensuing drive by forcing a fumble on a sack of David McComb, which Drew Logan recovered at the Cincinnati 34-yard line.

Kansas State and Texas State post high-yardage wins

Kansas State moved to 3-0 with a 31-20 victory over Tulane in Manhattan. Avery Johnson threw for 227 yards on 21-of-28 passing and rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, including a career-long 66-yard run. Jay Harris added two 1-yard touchdown runs for the Wildcats. In San Marcos, Texas State earned its first victory of the season in a 49-35 shootout over North Texas. The two programs accumulated 1,181 combined yards of offense. Davian Jackson scored four total touchdowns, including three rushing scores, while quarterback Brad Jackson threw four touchdown passes. North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson passed for a career-high 483 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.
