Tellado backs Pérez Llorca's management but stays silent on 2027 candidacy
PP secretary general Miguel Tellado lauded Juanfran Pérez Llorca's 'rigorous, quiet and effective' leadership of the Valencian government, but offered no clues on whether Llorca will be the party's candidate in 2027.
A show of support
Miguel Tellado, secretary general of the Partido Popular, delivered a strong endorsement of Juanfran Pérez Llorca's performance as president of the Generalitat Valenciana during a breakfast forum in Valencia on Thursday. Tellado described Llorca as a leader 'forged in the great municipalist quarry of the PP' and said he had 'returned the shine to the Valencian Community' after taking office in difficult circumstances seven months ago.
He has returned the shine to the Valencian Community.
Tellado stressed that the current Consell assumed government 'in conditions that were not easy' following the resignation of Carlos Mazón, and had since 'shored up and consolidated stability in this land' while advancing reconstruction after the dana of 29 October 2024.
Budget approval and criticism of Sánchez
The PP number two contrasted Llorca's record with that of prime minister Pedro Sánchez, noting that the Valencian government had approved its budgets, something Sánchez 'has not achieved in four years'. Tellado called the budgets 'good for this land, giving stability and hope for the future' and said the Consell had pushed them through 'alone', because the central government had 'abandoned the Valencian Community'.
In these few months he has achieved what Sánchez has not in four years: approving budgets.
He accused the Sánchez administration of a 'continuous boycott' and said the Generalitat had been forced to govern 'in the worst moment, with a government against the Valencian Community'.
Financing model dispute
Tellado also attacked the regional financing system, calling the current model 'even worse' and accusing Sánchez of shifting from 'if you need more help, ask for it' to 'if you need more money, vote for me'. He promised that this 'perverse formula' would end when the PP returns to national government, and that all autonomous communities would be 'well financed without blackmail'.
Sánchez has gone from 'if you need more help, ask for it' to 'if you need more money, vote for me'.
The 2027 question
Despite the effusive praise, Tellado avoided any reference to whether Llorca will be the PP's candidate for the Valencian regional elections in May 2027. The national party has set 18 July to proclaim candidates for provincial capital mayoralties, but will leave the selection of candidates for regional presidencies until after the summer. The silence leaves uncertainty within the Valencian PP, where Llorca's potential candidacy is a subject of internal debate.
