Supercell storm batters Baden-Württemberg, trapping motorists and downing power lines
Hurricane-force gusts, heavy rain and large hail swept across Baden-Württemberg on 16 July, toppling trees onto cars and power lines in Ulm and collapsing a carport onto four vehicles elsewhere in the state. No injuries were reported.
A severe thunderstorm supercell moved across the southwestern German state on Thursday, the German Weather Service (DWD) said. In the northern part of Ulm, a tree crashed onto a moving car, trapping the occupants inside until emergency services arrived. Another tree fell onto a power line, and branches and roof tiles were torn loose by the wind. The fire brigade reported no injuries. Separately, a carport collapsed onto four parked cars elsewhere in Baden-Württemberg.
The DWD warned that further thunderstorms could bring life-threatening conditions, with the risk of flash flooding and landslides.
