
Hit-and-run driver kills 23-year-old student near Rome; friend injured, suspect at large
A 23-year-old Italian student died and his friend was injured when a car struck them on a roadside in Guidonia Montecelio near Rome overnight and fled the scene. Carabinieri are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting witness statements to identify the driver.
Fatal hit-and-run in Guidonia Montecelio
In the early hours of June 13, a car struck two pedestrians along the SP27/b road in Via Pantano, Guidonia Montecelio, a municipality in the province of Rome. The two victims, both 23 years old, had been walking at the side of the road after leaving a local club or bar, according to Carabinieri's preliminary reconstruction. The driver did not stop; the vehicle continued and disappeared from the scene.
Victim succumbs despite emergency efforts
Emergency medical teams from the 118 service attempted resuscitation on one of the young men, an Italian student. He died at the scene. His friend, who was conscious after the crash, suffered injuries but is not in danger of life, reports indicate. The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released.
Investigation underway
The Carabinieri of the Guidonia Tenenza are examining the crash site and gathering evidence. Officers are reviewing CCTV recordings from nearby surveillance cameras and interviewing witnesses who may have seen the vehicle before or after the incident. The driver faces potential charges of vehicular homicide and hit-and-run, though authorities have not yet located the suspect.
