Casper Stornes wins shortened Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt as Norway sweeps top two places
Ironman world champion Casper Stornes claimed the European title on a heat-shortened course in Frankfurt, finishing ahead of compatriot Gustav Iden. German professionals missed the podium, with Jan Stratmann taking tenth and a spot for the Hawaii world championship.
Norwegian dominance amid extreme heat
Casper Stornes, the reigning Ironman world champion, won the European Championship in Frankfurt on Sunday in 4 hours 50 minutes and 23 seconds, leading a Norwegian one-two. Gustav Iden finished second, 2 minutes and 30 seconds behind, while Spain’s Antonio Benito Lopes took third in 4:54:47. The two Norwegians celebrated with a rowing imitation popularized during the football World Cup.
Race adjustments for athlete safety
Organizers cut the bike leg from 180 to 125 kilometres and replaced the full marathon with a half-marathon (21.1 km) after forecasts of temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. The 3.8 km swim in the 29°C Langener Waldsee remained unchanged and was completed without wetsuits. Additional cooling stations, extra water and electrolytes, shaded course sections, and increased medical support were deployed.
These adjustments were made to reduce prolonged heat exposure and support the health of the athletes.
German athletes off the podium
Jan Stratmann was the best-placed German, crossing the line tenth in 4:57:35. The 30-year-old secured one of six Frankfurt-allocated slots for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii this October. Jonas Hoffmann, who finished fifth last year, was among 15 German professionals in the field. Around 3,000 amateur athletes from 83 nations also competed.
How the race unfolded
Stornes entered the decisive run 1 minute and 11 seconds behind France’s Nathan Guerbeur but used his running strength to take the lead after only a few kilometres. The 29-year-old was the third-place finisher at last year’s Frankfurt event. Iden, the vice world champion, and Dane Magnus Ditlev had been named as other pre-race contenders.
