Sylvester Stallone turns 80: the Rocky and Rambo star reflects on a career of hits, physical toll, and a fight for his legacy
The actor, screenwriter and director who created Rocky Balboa and John Rambo marks his 80th birthday on July 6, still active in Hollywood while battling for control of his most famous creation.
From Hell's Kitchen to Hollywood icon
Sylvester Stallone was born on July 6, 1946 in New York's Hell's Kitchen neighbourhood. A forceps injury during birth damaged a facial nerve, leaving him with a partially paralysed lower left face and a distinctive speech pattern that became his trademark. His childhood was marked by poverty, his parents' divorce when he was 11, and a series of school expulsions. Before breaking into acting, he slept in a bus station and sold his dog for $40. Desperate for money, he appeared in a low-budget erotic film for $200.
The bet that changed everything
The turning point came in 1976. Inspired by a boxing match in which underdog Chuck Wepner lasted 15 rounds against Muhammad Ali, Stallone wrote the script for Rocky in a matter of days. Studios offered to buy the screenplay, but he refused to sell unless he could star. The gamble paid off: made on a shoestring budget of $1 million, the film won three Oscars, including Best Picture, and launched Stallone as a new Hollywood star.
My life is 96% failures and 4% successes, but Rocky was my greatest success.
Rambo and the action era
In the 1980s, Stallone created another enduring character: John Rambo, a tormented Vietnam veteran. The Rambo saga, along with further Rocky sequels, cemented his status as an action icon. Films like Cobra, Tango & Cash, Cliffhanger and Demolition Man followed. In 2010 he wrote, directed and starred in The Expendables, a homage to 80s and 90s blockbusters. His films have grossed over $4 billion worldwide, and he has had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 1984.
A legacy under dispute
As he turns 80, Stallone is still working: he stars in the Paramount+ series Tulsa King, now awaiting its fourth season. But off-screen he is fighting a different battle. The rights to the Rocky franchise remain with producer Irwin Winkler, despite Stallone having created and written the character. A film about the making of Rocky, titled I Play Rocky, is set for release in December to mark the 50th anniversary, but Stallone says he was not consulted.
Director Peter Farrelly countered that Stallone had given the green light and may have forgotten while focused on his memoirs.I was shocked by the news. I have nothing to do with it.
Memoirs and the next round
Stallone is preparing his own version of events. His memoirs, titled The Steps in English and Los escalones in Spanish, will be published on October 8. The book promises his personal account of a life spent rewriting his own story, caught between the muscle-bound action hero and the sensitive writer who admires Edgar Allan Poe. At 80, the Italian Stallion is still swinging.
