Child custody dispute triggers shooting at German welfare facility, six dead
Police have arrested a 45-year-old man after a shooting at a mother-and-child welfare facility in Stade, Germany, that killed six employees and injured several others. The attack stemmed from a family custody dispute over the suspect's three-month-old daughter.
On the ground
Just after 12:10 local time on Monday, June 29, 2026, emergency calls reported gunfire at a mother-and-child welfare facility on Dankerstrasse in Stade, a town of 48,000 people near Hamburg. Five victims, four women and one man, died at the scene. A sixth victim, also a man, succumbed to injuries in hospital later. All six were employees of the facility. The suspect's three-month-old daughter and the child's mother were inside the building during the attack but escaped unharmed. Several other people were wounded, some critically, and police warned that the death toll could rise.
Motive: the custody dispute
Investigators quickly linked the shooting to a family dispute over child custody.
Lower Saxony interior minister Daniela Behrens described the attack as "for family reasons" and "an act of violence carried out with extreme coldness, without political or economic motives." Authorities stated that no political or extremist background was present. The man had a scheduled appointment on Monday with several of the victims to discuss the custody of his three-month-old daughter.
Suspect and the getaway
The alleged gunman is a 45-year-old German national of Turkish descent, born in Germany and residing in Hanover. He was known to police for previous threats but was not considered particularly dangerous and did not possess a firearms licence. After the shooting, he fled in a car driven by a woman. Witnesses told Focus Online that a police officer shouted "Stop! Freeze!" but the vehicle continued, prompting officers to fire at least 10 to 15 shots. The car was eventually stopped at a roadblock on a rural road. Video from Bild shows armed police dragging the two occupants from the vehicle and handcuffing them. A third person was later arrested, but their involvement remains under investigation.
Community and police response
Police cordoned off the area, deployed helicopters, and reassured the public there was no further danger. Children at a nearby daycare and primary school were not at risk, city officials said. Crisis counsellors and psychologists were sent to support those affected. The welfare facility is located close to the town's police station. An increase in the death toll cannot be ruled out, as some of the injured are in serious condition.
Context
Mass shootings remain rare in Germany, though the country has witnessed high-profile cases such as the 2023 Hamburg Jehovah's Witness hall attack and the 2016 Munich rampage. The Stade incident, with its domestic-motive profile, does not appear to signal a broader terrorism threat.
