Sporting CP sign Brazilian goalkeeper Kaique Pereira from Palmeiras for €4 million
Sporting CP have completed the transfer of 23-year-old goalkeeper Kaique Pereira from Palmeiras on a five-year contract, filling the vacancy left by João Virgínia.
Goalkeeper transition at Alvalade
Sporting CP completed the transfer of Brazilian goalkeeper Kaique Pereira from Palmeiras on Saturday afternoon. The 23-year-old signed a five-season contract running until June 2031, protected by a release clause set at 80 million euros. Sporting paid a transfer fee of 4 million euros to Palmeiras for the permanent deal. Sporting had reviewed their goalkeeping hierarchy since June, aiming to raise competition for starting goalkeeper Rui Silva following his arrival from Betis. The move addresses the vacancy created by 26-year-old goalkeeper João Virgínia, who sought regular playing time and joined English club Wolverhampton under manager César Peixoto to compete alongside José Sá.
I want to leave a word of good luck to Virgínia. He behaved very well during his time at Sporting, even though he was not the starter. I think he is looking to play and deserves that. Kaique is an opportunity we had, someone we had been watching for some time and who we think will have a very good future.
Career path through Portuguese football
Born in São Paulo, Kaique developed in the youth system at Portuguesa before joining Palmeiras at the age of 16. The Brazil under-20 international earned promotion to the senior squad under manager Abel Ferreira after Vinícius Silvestre moved to Portimonense. Palmeiras had previously developed other players connected to Sporting, including Luis Guilherme and Pedro Lima. Kaique built experience in Portuguese football across two consecutive loan spells. He first made seven appearances for Farense in the 2024–2025 season, conceding seven goals. During the 2025–2026 campaign at Nacional, he made 28 appearances, conceded 35 goals, and recorded the highest number of penalty saves in the league with four, stopping two in a single match against Tondela.
Being here is special, and now it is about taking advantage of it and giving my maximum.
