
Search underway for 65-year-old spearfisherman missing off Crete’s Sfakia coast
A search operation is ongoing in the sea area of Sfakia, Crete, for a 65-year-old man who went spearfishing on Tuesday and did not return home.
Disappearance
The 65-year-old man set out from his home around midday on Tuesday, 7 July 2026, planning to go spearfishing in the waters off Fragokastello, in the Sfakia municipality of Chania, Crete. He told his family he intended to dive with a speargun. When he failed to come back at the expected time, his relatives grew worried and notified the authorities late Tuesday evening.
Search operation
The Hellenic Coast Guard quickly coordinated a multi‑asset response. Two Coast Guard vessels are scanning the wider marine area. A Frontex unmanned aerial vehicle is assisting from above, while a local fishing boat has joined the effort at sea. On land, two Coast Guard patrol cars are supporting the search along the shoreline. The operation is being run from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center.
