Spanish businessman missing in Ionian Sea after falling overboard while wife drifts for three days
A search operation is underway in the Ionian Sea for 66-year-old Spanish businessman Juan Jose Mutilba Obregon, who fell overboard while sailing from Sicily to Greece, leaving his wife adrift for three days before rescue.
Slipped overboard during Sicily-to-Greece crossing
A search and rescue operation continues across the Ionian Sea for 66-year-old Spanish businessman Juan Jose Mutilba Obregon, who disappeared after falling from his sailboat. The couple had set sail on Monday, 17 August 2026, from Syracuse in Sicily, charting a course toward the Greek coastal town of Pylos. On the morning of Tuesday, 18 August 2026, Mutilba caught a tuna and hauled it onto the deck of the vessel. While cleaning and attempting to handle the catch, he slipped on the fish blood on deck and fell directly into the sea. His 67-year-old wife, Carmen, heard his desperate shouts from the water as the boat continued forward under power.
Mencu, Mencu, turn off the engine!
Although Carmen possessed a recreational boating license acquired years earlier, shock and a lack of practical experience prevented her from shutting down the motor or immobilizing the vessel before it moved out of reach.
Three days drifting without mobile signal
The French-flagged sailboat powered away from the spot of the fall, leaving Mutilba behind in open water while his wife remained trapped on board. Carmen drifted across the maritime corridor between Sicily and Greece for nearly 72 hours without any cellular network connection to call emergency services. Her isolation ended on Friday, 21 August 2026, when her mobile phone finally reconnected to a cellular network. She placed an emergency call to a knowledgeable family friend with maritime navigation expertise. That friend immediately alerted the Spanish sea rescue agency, Salvamento Maritimo, which subsequently transmitted emergency distress data to Italian and Greek authorities.
- Juan Jose Mutilba Obregon and his wife depart Syracuse, Sicily, aboard their sailboat bound for Pylos
- Mutilba falls overboard after catching a tuna, and the sailboat continues moving forward out of reach
- Carmen regains phone signal after 72 hours adrift, leading to her rescue 18 nautical miles off Pylos
- Search operations continue as the couple's son arrives in Pylos requesting additional rescue assets
Interception and rescue off the coast of Pylos
Upon receiving the coordinates from the Joint Rescue Coordination Center, the Pylos Port Authority launched an interception mission approximately 18 nautical miles off the coast of Pylos. Greek rescue teams deployed two Coast Guard patrol boats, a land patrol vehicle along the coastline, and the local fishing vessel IOANNA-MARINA. Rescuers located the French-flagged sailboat drifting in open water with Carmen on board as the sole passenger. She was found in good health despite spending three days adrift. The fishing vessel, accompanied by the patrol boats, towed the sailboat safely into Pylos marina on Friday.
Search efforts and family appeals in Greece
Maritime authorities continue conducting search operations in the waters of the Ionian Sea to trace the missing Spanish businessman. Mutilba, a native of Burgos who retired from business in 2021, dedicated much of his free time to sailing trips with his wife. His son, Sergio Mutilba, traveled to Pylos following the rescue of his mother to track operational developments directly. Speaking to media, he urged authorities not to suspend the search and requested that Spain deploy additional maritime rescue assets to assist Greek teams. The family has also registered the disappearance with the Spanish embassy in Rome, while the Pylos Port Authority carries out a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the fall.
