Spain carries record six-match shutout streak into World Cup quarter-final against Belgium in Los Angeles
La Roja have not conceded a goal in 609 minutes of World Cup play and face a Belgium side coming off a four-goal statement win against the United States. The winner meets France in the semi-final on Tuesday.
A defensive record on the line
Spain enter the World Cup quarter-final against Belgium having set a new tournament record with six consecutive clean sheets, a run stretching back to the group stage. Goalkeeper Unai Simón has now gone 609 minutes without conceding a World Cup goal, making just six saves across five matches, barely more than one per match. La Roja have allowed only 1.49 expected goals across the tournament, the best defensive mark of any team in the field, and have conceded just 29 total shots with only five landing on target.
The statistics evoke Spain's 2010 World Cup triumph, when the team scored eight goals in seven matches and conceded only two, winning all four knockout games 1-0. This year's side has been similarly economical, scoring multiple goals in only two of their five matches but always doing enough.
Spain hasn't been winning 'pretty' during much of this tournament, but the team is winning in a way reminiscent of its previous World Cup triumph.
Belgium's attacking test
Belgium arrives at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood buoyed by a four-goal performance against the United States in the round of 16. Romelu Lukaku, the country's all-time leading scorer, has become a potent substitute, scoring three times off the bench, but was ineffective in his only start and is unlikely to feature from the opening whistle.
Manchester City winger Jérémy Doku did not start against the United States and could return to the lineup. The Belgian attack faces a Spanish defence that has been far less charitable than the American backline, which gifted most of Belgium's goals in the previous round.
The two nations have met twice before at a World Cup, with one victory each. The winner in Los Angeles will advance to a semi-final against France on Tuesday.
- Spain beat Portugal 1-0, mirroring the scoreline and opponent from the 2010 round of 16. Lamine Yamal plays his first full 90 minutes.
- Spain face Belgium at SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, carrying a record six-match clean sheet streak. Belgium eliminated the United States 4-0 in the previous round.
- The winner will meet France in the first semi-final.
Key absences and form
Several star names on both sides have yet to hit their peak at this tournament. Lamine Yamal, Spain's 18-year-old prodigy, played his first full 90 minutes in the round-of-16 win over Portugal but has not yet made a decisive impact. Nico Williams, who starred opposite Yamal when Spain won Euro 2024, has barely featured because of injury.
For Belgium, Lukaku's role as a substitute rather than starter has reshaped the attack, while Doku's limited minutes have raised questions about the starting eleven. The match kicks off at 3 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Fox in English and Telemundo in Spanish.
