Spain and Portugal clash in World Cup last 16 as Ronaldo's final campaign meets in-form La Roja
Spain and Portugal face off in the World Cup round of 16 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas on Monday, with Cristiano Ronaldo's final campaign meeting a Spanish side that has yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
A familiar rivalry
Spain and Portugal meet in the World Cup round of 16 for the first time since 2010, when a David Villa goal sent La Roja through en route to their only world title. Sixteen years later, Cristiano Ronaldo is the sole survivor from that night, still chasing the trophy that has eluded him. The 41-year-old's Portugal side also carries the confidence of a Nations League final victory over Spain last year, according to RTVE.es.
Spain's resurgence
Luis de la Fuente's team arrives in Dallas having not conceded a single goal in the tournament. A goalless draw with Cape Verde in their opener raised doubts, but wins over Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in the group stage, followed by a 3-0 dismantling of Austria in the round of 32, have restored belief. The coach appears to have settled on a starting eleven, with Dani Olmo in the attacking midfield role and Pedro Porro at right-back. Unai Simón acknowledged the challenge of matching their Euro 2024-winning form.
That tournament was quite complete, carried out to perfection. Having that objective is always good. To beat Portugal we have to reach that level.
Portugal's narrow escape
Portugal topped their group with a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan and two draws, then needed a dramatic extra-time victory over Croatia to advance. Gonçalo Ramos scored the winner after a late Croatia equaliser was disallowed by a chip in the ball that detected an offside invisible to the naked eye. Diogo Costa's goalkeeping was crucial. The team has yet to hit the heights expected of a squad featuring Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leão and Ronaldo.
Referee in the spotlight
English official Anthony Taylor takes charge of his third match at this World Cup, having previously handled Uzbekistan vs Colombia and Senegal vs Iran. Taylor is a familiar figure to Spain: he refereed their Euro 2024 quarter-final win over Germany, where a controversial handball by Marc Cucurella went unpunished, and the 2025 Nations League final defeat to France. His appointment adds an extra layer of scrutiny to an already tense Iberian derby.
What's at stake
The winner will face either the United States or Belgium in the quarter-finals, with that match kicking off at 2:00 a.m. Spanish time on Tuesday. For Spain, a victory would keep alive hopes of a second star; for Portugal, it would extend Ronaldo's final World Cup campaign. Kickoff at AT&T Stadium is at 21:00 CET, with live coverage on La 1, DAZN and RTVE Play.
