AEMET issues weather warnings across Spain as cut-off low brings heavy rain
AEMET has placed nine autonomous communities under weather warnings on 5 October 2026 as a cut-off low west of Portugal triggers heavy rain, storms, and a red alert in Barcelona.
Weather alerts and warning levels across nine autonomous communities
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has issued weather warnings across nine autonomous communities for Monday, 5 October 2026. A red alert covers the pre-coastal area of Barcelona until 10:00, with forecast accumulated rainfall reaching 90 litres per square metre. Orange alerts for heavy rain and thunderstorms apply to the provinces of Salamanca, Cáceres, and Girona. Yellow alerts are in place across fifteen provinces and regions, including Asturias, Mallorca, Ávila, Segovia, Valladolid, Soria, Zamora, Albacete, Guadalajara, Cuenca, Badajoz, Lugo, Ourense, the Community of Madrid, and Murcia. Although overall precipitation intensity decreases compared to the preceding weekend, severe localized downpours remain forecast across central and northern areas.
Atmospheric instability driven by an Atlantic cut-off low
The unstable weather conditions across the Iberian Peninsula are driven by an isolated depression at high levels, positioned to the west of Portugal. The system will generate widespread cloudiness and scattered morning thunderstorms across central and northern Spain. During the afternoon, rainfall will intensify and spread to the mountain areas of the northwest, the northern and southern plateaus, and the Sistema Central range, where precipitation may become very heavy. Significant rainfall accumulations are also expected in eastern Catalonia, including light morning showers around 09:00 in Castelldefels and Sabadell. In the southern third of the peninsula, rain remains improbable and isolated. The Balearic Islands will experience cloudy intervals with occasional strong thunderstorms, while the Canary Islands will see mostly clear conditions.
- Scattered showers begin in central and northern Spain, with fog in Burgos and Manacor.
- AEMET red alert expires for the Barcelona pre-coastal area after potential 90 l/m2 rainfall.
- Light rain develops in northern municipalities including Irun and Castelldefels.
- Rainfall intensifies across the Sistema Central, both plateaus, and northwest mountains.
- Santiago de Compostela reaches daily maximum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius before evening clouds.
Temperature patterns and local wind conditions

Sevilla will record the highest forecast maximum at 32 degrees Celsius, followed by Almería and Manacor at 30 degrees Celsius, and Níjar, Ourense, and Linares at 29 degrees Celsius. In Galicia, Santiago de Compostela will reach 27 degrees Celsius around 17:00, matching Pontevedra, while Torremolinos will record 27 degrees Celsius with light southerly breezes. In northern areas, maximum temperatures will reach 26 degrees Celsius in Irun, 25 degrees Celsius in Pamplona, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Valladolid, and 23 degrees Celsius in Burgos.
