Why the sky still fascinates
During an eclipse, light shifts abruptly, shadows change, the surroundings take on a silvery-gray tone, and the temperature can drop noticeably. Stars may become visible and birds fall silent. Guido Thimm from the Center for Astronomy at Heidelberg University (ZAH) says the experience stays with people.

He adds that people still feel relief when the sun returns, sensing directly how important it is. Before the rise of natural sciences, a solar eclipse was seen by most peoples as an omen of disaster, blamed for wars, uprisings, plagues, famines, and earthquakes.
Astronomy as the oldest science
Unusual celestial events drew intense attention for practical reasons. Sky observation was used to predict weather, the position of the sun and constellations indicated the season, stars served navigation, and moon phases structured time. Walschburger explains the dependency.
People were altogether much more dependent on open nature and the course of the heavens.
Thimm calls astronomy the oldest science in the world, noting that astronomical knowledge could decide over life and death. Court astronomers in ancient Egypt predicted the agriculturally vital Nile floods roughly 5,000 years ago. In many cultures, the sky was regarded as the seat of divine powers with human traits, and the sun was worshipped as a deity. In Egyptian mythology, the sun was personified by the god Ra.
A fascination rooted in evolution
Walschburger argues that the immense significance of celestial events for daily life and belief is still embedded in humans today. The cultural and civilizational development moves much faster than our natural-genetic evolution, he says. Even though humans are now far less dependent on nature and can explain its phenomena scientifically, sensory perceptions like a dark wall of clouds or a pleasant sunny day remain closely tied to psyche and wellbeing.
One growing obstacle to observing the night sky is light pollution. As artificial lighting increasingly obscures the stars, the ability to see the heavens diminishes, and with it, the desire to look up.
