SATA flight to Toronto diverts to Terceira after smoke fills cabin; six treated for inhalation
Six people were treated for smoke inhalation after a SATA flight from Ponta Delgada to Toronto diverted to Terceira island on Tuesday, 7 July.
What happened
A SATA Air Açores flight from Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel island, to Toronto declared an emergency shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, 7 July, when smoke was detected in the cabin. The crew diverted the aircraft to Lajes airport on Terceira island, where it landed safely. Regional civil protection, firefighters and medical teams were on standby.
Casualties and medical response
Six people who inhaled smoke were transported to health facilities on Terceira. Three were taken to Hospital de Santo Espírito da Ilha Terceira in Angra do Heroísmo, and three to the Centro de Saúde de Praia da Vitória. Several other passengers were assessed on the runway but did not require hospitalisation.
Flight path and emergency services
Flight tracking data confirmed the diversion. The aircraft had departed from João Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada and was en route to Toronto, Canada. The emergency was declared while the plane was still near the Azores archipelago. Firefighters from Praia da Vitória and Angra do Heroísmo, along with an advanced life support ambulance, responded at the civil terminal of Lajes.
Airline and official statements
SATA has not yet issued a public statement on the cause of the smoke. The Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores (SRPCBA) confirmed the six transports and said the landing was carried out without further incident. No injuries beyond smoke inhalation have been reported.
