Smart door viewers replace standard peepholes with digital displays and remote recording
Digital door peepholes with cameras, built-in internal screens, and remote phone connectivity are replacing traditional optical peepholes to improve home monitoring.
Traditional optical peepholes provide direct visibility only when an occupant is standing directly at the door, offering no ability to capture footage or alert residents remotely. Smart door viewers address these limitations by integrating digital cameras, indoor displays, motion detection, and smartphone connectivity into dedicated smart home hardware.
Models on the market differ in camera hardware and optical coverage. The IMOU VD1-5M0S includes a 5 MP camera with a resolution of 2880 x 1620 pixels and a 149-degree diagonal field of view, paired with a 4.3-inch screen mounted inside the door. In comparison, the TECHNAXX TX-366 uses a 3 MP camera delivering 2304 x 1296 pixels across a 142-degree field of view, also utilizing a 4.3-inch display.

Beyond basic viewing, devices such as the IMOU model incorporate automatic person detection through Always-on Video (AOV) modes, allowing users to capture manual photos and video recordings upon receiving alerts. Recorded media is stored locally through supported microSD cards.
