Sandra Bullock details partner Bryan Randall's private ALS battle and four years of anticipatory grief
In a podcast interview on SmartLess, actress Sandra Bullock revealed why partner Bryan Randall kept his fatal ALS diagnosis secret until his August 2023 death, and how she navigated years of private caregiving.
Silence around a private diagnosis
Sandra Bullock spoke in detail about the illness and death of her longtime partner, photographer Bryan Randall, during an episode of the SmartLess podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. Randall died on 5 August 2023 at age 57 after living for three years with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an incurable neurodegenerative disease that impairs nerve cells and leads to progressive muscle weakness. Throughout the illness, Randall requested that his diagnosis remain completely secret from the public and media outlets. Bullock explained that respecting his request forced her to carry an intense emotional burden without outside support. She described feeling deeply isolated as she balanced public silence with the reality of his declining health.
I was not allowed to talk about it. That was the request and I tried; I honored it.
Caretaking and pandemic isolation
The necessity of maintaining secrecy coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, deepening the sense of isolation inside the family home. Bullock took on demanding caregiving duties, organizing medical evaluations, breathing tests, and drug study participation. For an extended period, her sister Gesine Bullock-Prado was the only family member who knew of the ALS diagnosis. Bullock initially believed she could bear the responsibility entirely on her own. As the physical symptoms combined with cognitive and psychological strain, she eventually confided in close friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka (the wife of Jason Bateman).
I started mourning Bryan four years before he died.
Managing illness within the family
Bullock explained that her grieving process began long before Randall passed away, describing how the illness gradually took away the partner she knew while his body remained. She managed the daily care routine alongside the upbringing of her two adopted children, Louis (now 16) and Laila (now 12), as well as Randall's adult daughter Skylar (now 32). The actress noted that Laila in particular viewed Randall as a father figure, making the household environment especially delicate. Bullock drew on her past experiences caring for her mother during cancer and tending to her ailing father, explaining that she felt capable of quietly planning medical logistics even as the emotional toll expanded. Bullock noted that the constant operational treadmill of caregiving kept her from fully absorbing the emotional reality of the loss until after Randall had died.

Hiatus and return to the screen
Bullock and Randall had been together since 2015, after meeting when Randall was hired to photograph a birthday party for Louis, whom Bullock adopted in 2010. Following Randall's passing in August 2023, Randall's family confirmed his private battle in a public statement, and Bullock withdrew from acting to prioritize family recovery. Her appearance on SmartLess, published to subscribers on 17 August 2026 ahead of wide distribution on 24 August, represents her first open discussion about the loss. Bullock is set to return to movie theaters on 10 September 2026 in Practical Magic 2, reprising her role alongside co-star Nicole Kidman.
