Barcelona sign Joao Cancelo on free transfer through 2029 following Al-Hilal exit
The 32-year-old Portugal defender agreed a three-year deal after terminating his contract in Saudi Arabia, completing his third stint with the Catalan club.
Permanent agreement following contract release
Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that Portugal defender João Cancelo has joined the club on a free transfer, signing a contract through 30 June 2029. The 32-year-old full-back secured his return after mutually terminating his agreement with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, which he originally joined in 2024. Cancelo completed the paperwork at the club facilities alongside Barcelona president Joan Laporta, vice-president Rafa Yuste, and sporting director Deco. The move marks his third period with the Catalan team and his first on a permanent basis following two loan spells.
It's my dream. I'm where I want to be and I am very happy. I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club.
Negotiations and presentation delay
The transfer concluded after extended discussions with Al-Hilal, during which Cancelo spent a week training apart from the squad. The player explained that he took financial and personal steps to obtain his release, presenting an explicit choice to Barcelona sporting director Deco to finalize the move.
I told Deco that either I came here or I stayed there for a year without playing while collecting my salary.
The formalization followed a delay on Wednesday evening during the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Egyptian club Al-Ahly, which Barcelona won 2-1. Cancelo had dressed in the number 2 kit and waited in the Camp Nou tunnel for the pre-match presentation. Club staff informed him moments before the announcement that transfer paperwork had not cleared in time, preventing his participation in the ceremony.
Career records across European leagues
Cancelo previously made 65 appearances for Barcelona across two separate loan stints, recording six goals and nine assists. His initial spell during the 2023-24 season produced 42 appearances, four goals, and five assists while on loan from Manchester City. After moving to Al-Hilal in 2024, where he contributed three goals and 13 assists in 45 matches, he returned to Barcelona on loan in January 2026. During that second spell, he made 23 appearances, scored two goals, and provided three assists as Barcelona retained the LaLiga title.

Squad restructuring under Hansi Flick
Cancelo is Barcelona's fifth signing of the summer transfer window, joining Spain midfielder Rodri, wingers Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, and youth forward Jesse Bisiwu. The club completed Rodri's arrival from Manchester City for a fee of approximately £65 million following Spain's World Cup victory. Barcelona also reshaped their attack after striker Robert Lewandowski transferred to MLS club Chicago Fire and Ferran Torres moved to Paris Saint-Germain, though an attempt to acquire Argentina forward Julian Alvarez stalled when Atletico Madrid refused to negotiate a sale.
Manager Hansi Flick requested Cancelo to reinforce defensive depth across both flanks, where Jules Kounde had served as the sole established right-back, supported by Eric Garcia. Barcelona begin their LaLiga title defense on Sunday with an away match against Elche.
