Morocco beats Scotland 1-0 as Saibari scores fastest goal of 2026 World Cup
Ismael Saibari struck 70 seconds after kick-off, the fastest goal of the 2026 World Cup so far, to give Morocco a 1-0 victory over Scotland and take control of Group C.
Saibari’s lightning-fast goal
Brahim Díaz carved open the Scottish defence with a chipped pass into the right channel, and Ismael Saibari, the PSV forward, volleyed past Angus Gunn from inside the area after only 70 seconds. The strike surpassed Hakim Ziyech’s four-minute effort against Canada in Qatar four years ago as the quickest Morocco goal at a World Cup, and the tournament’s fastest to date. The early blow stunned a Tartan Army that had filled the streets of Boston with chants of “No Scotland, no party”, but the celebrations lasted barely a minute.
Scotland’s fight and the penalty flashpoint
The team coached by Steve Clarke recovered composure but struggled to threaten Yassine Bounou’s goal, failing to register a single shot on target across the 90 minutes. Scotland’s biggest moment came early in the second half when Neil El Aynaoui clipped John McGinn on the edge of the area; Clarke’s players appealed furiously for a penalty, but Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev waved play on and the VAR did not intervene. The sequence of key incidents is laid out below.
- Match kicks off at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough.
- Ismael Saibari scores the fastest goal of the tournament, assisted by Brahim Díaz.
- Issa Diop receives a yellow card for a foul on Che Adams.
- Half-time: Scotland 0–1 Morocco.
- Referee waves away a penalty claim after Neil El Aynaoui’s challenge on John McGinn; VAR does not intervene.
- Saibari’s shot strikes the crossbar after a swift counter-attack.
- The crowd applauds for a 76-year-old Scottish fan who died recently; a tribute takes place at the 76th minute.
- Final whistle: Morocco beat Scotland 1–0.
Morocco’s dominance and near-misses
Morocco enjoyed 59% possession and produced 12 attempts, but almost paid for their wastefulness. After the penalty let-off, Bilal El Khannouss sprinted down the left and crossed for Saibari, whose shot deflected off Jack Hendry and struck the crossbar. Achraf Hakimi’s late runs from right-back and Díaz’s dribbling kept Scotland pinned back, although the African champions were relieved to hear the final whistle without conceding an equaliser.
A moving tribute in the stands
Before kick-off and again in the 76th minute, the 64,146 crowd inside Gillette Stadium paid tribute to a 76-year-old Scottish supporter who died recently after fainting in his hotel room. Scotland’s fans raised a prolonged ovation in honour of one of their own, marking the man’s age with the timing of the applause. The gesture added a poignant note to a match where the result carried serious group-stage consequences.
What it means for Group C
Morocco, with four points from the draw against Brazil and this victory, are on the verge of the round of 16. Scotland remain on three points after their opening win over Haiti and now face a decisive final group game against Brazil. The Atlas Lions have extended their unbeaten run in World Cup group matches to six, while Scotland’s first tournament appearance since 1998 will hinge on that showdown.
