GDDKiA begins 13.8 million PLN resurfacing of S5 expressway near Poznan
Crews closed a 9-kilometre stretch of the Gniezno-bound carriageway on 1 October 2026, redirecting all bypass traffic onto a single lane in each direction until mid-December.
Launch of roadworks on the S5 expressway
The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways started announced renovation works on the S5 expressway near Poznan on 1 October 2026. The road modernization project covers a 9-kilometre section of the eastern bypass of Poznan located between the Poznan Wschod and Strumiany interchanges. Road management teams altered the traffic layout during the night between Wednesday and Thursday to prepare the corridor for heavy machinery. Commuters travelling along this route faced substantial traffic congestion starting early on Thursday morning as vehicles adjusted to the modified conditions. Road authorities indicated that journeys across this corridor will take more time in the coming months while maintenance crews carry out the contracted resurfacing.
Traffic rerouting and lane configurations
Under the newly introduced traffic arrangement, the road agency fully closed the carriageway carrying vehicles toward Gniezno. Motorists heading in both directions must now travel along the single remaining carriageway that leads toward the A2 motorway. This shared two-way configuration extends across the full 9-kilometre construction zone between the two designated interchanges. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways confirmed the specific routing details in an official update on Thursday.
As part of this stage of work, the carriageway toward Gniezno was closed, and vehicular traffic operates in both directions on the carriageway leading toward the A2 motorway. This applies to a section 9 km in length.
To minimize safety risks within the restricted two-way corridor, transport authorities issued a formal safety appeal to all drivers passing through the area.
We ask drivers to exercise special caution, pay attention to temporary signage, and adjust their speed to current traffic conditions.
Technical pavement replacement and contractor scope
The road modernization requires workers to completely replace three structural layers of the road surface along the closed Gniezno-bound lanes. Engineering crews will replace the foundation base course, the intermediate binding layer, and the final top wearing course across the full 9-kilometre segment. Beyond the main expressway lanes, the construction scope encompasses the Kleszczewo interchange to repair pavement connecting the regional road network. The road authority selected Colas Polska, a civil engineering firm based in Paledzie, as the contractor for the infrastructure task. Polish road officials stated that a renovation of the opposite carriageway leading toward the A2 motorway is not currently planned.
- Traffic organization modified between Poznan Wschod and Strumiany
- Gniezno-bound carriageway closed and 9 km resurfacing begins
- Target completion of all resurfacing works by mid-December
Project budget and completion schedule
The formal infrastructure agreement signed for the eastern bypass renewal carries a total value of more than 13.8 million PLN. Construction operations will continue throughout the autumn season until the final stages of the project in late 2026. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways anticipates that all pavement reconstruction and interchange works will conclude in the first half of December. If all phases proceed according to the operational schedule, the contractor expects to finish the overhaul by mid-December at the latest. Until the reopening, drivers must continue following temporary traffic controls across the 9-kilometre section.
