Russia strikes Kyiv with 419 missiles and drones, killing 11 and wounding over 60
Russia launched a massive combined air attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, firing 68 missiles and 351 drones. At least 11 people were killed and more than 60 injured, with rescue operations ongoing.
Massive overnight assault
Russia launched a combined air attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region in the early hours of Monday, firing 68 missiles and 351 drones. The barrage, which the Ukrainian Air Force said was primarily aimed at the capital, struck residential buildings, infrastructure, and other sites across multiple districts. At least 11 people were killed and more than 60 injured, according to the latest figures from President Volodymyr Zelensky and local officials. Rescue workers continued to search through rubble for survivors hours after the strikes.
Air defense showed good results in shooting down drones and cruise missiles, but unfortunately not against Russian ballistic missiles.
Air defense and impact
Ukraine's air defense forces intercepted 37 missiles and 326 drones out of the total 419 incoming threats, the Air Force reported. The intercepted missiles included 31 Kh-101 cruise missiles and 6 Kalibr cruise missiles. However, all 29 ballistic and anti-ship missiles, including Iskander-M, S-400, and Zircon/Oniks types, hit their targets at 34 locations. Debris from downed drones fell at 16 additional sites, causing fires and damage. In the capital's Podilskyi district, a nine-story apartment block was partially destroyed, with floors five through nine collapsing. Rescuers evacuated 28 residents from upper floors using ladders.
Vyshneve evacuation
In the town of Vyshneve, west of Kyiv, authorities evacuated more than 500 people from a private sector area due to the threat of repeated detonation of explosive objects at a strike site. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the evacuation was temporary while emergency crews worked to secure the area. Ukrainian officials did not specify what was hit, but Russia's defense ministry claimed it was a fuel and lubricants warehouse. The area remained cordoned off by police.
Already temporarily evacuated more than 500 people until the completion of liquidation works.
International response and warnings
Poland scrambled military aircraft overnight in response to the Russian long-range aviation activity, its operational command said. President Zelensky had warned on Sunday that Russia was preparing a massive attack after the US Independence Day holiday and ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara. He renewed calls for Western partners to supply more air defense systems, specifically additional missiles for Patriot batteries. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko declared Tuesday, July 7, a day of mourning in the city.
Escalation pattern
The attack follows an even larger Russian barrage on the night of July 2–3, when Moscow used 74 missiles and 496 drones against Ukraine, killing 31 people in Kyiv alone and injuring at least 100. The back-to-back strikes mark an intensification of aerial assaults on the capital.
