Ukrainian drone strike kills Russian general Anton Grunis weeks after state honour

Targeted strike in occupied Donetsk

Ukrainian drone forces killed Russian General Anton Grunis during a nighttime strike on a command post in the occupied Donetsk region. Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, announced on 16 September that the operation took place on 12 September in the frontline village of Kindrativka. Brovdi stated that drone swarms from the Rarog unit within the 427th Unmanned Systems Brigade struck the building where Grunis was staying, and he shared footage of the strike through public broadcaster Suspilne. Russian commander Apti Alaudinov of the Akhmat special forces confirmed the death on Telegram, stating that Grunis died as a hero. Russian military bloggers also verified the fatality, while the Russian Defence Ministry released no formal statement.

General Grunis was eliminated on September 12.

Disputed claims in Kostiantynivka

Grunis commanded Russia's 4th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, which fought in eastern Ukraine around Bakhmut and Kostiantynivka. On 3 July, Grunis spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a televised security conference, claiming that his brigade had captured Kostiantynivka. Putin congratulated the commander on the reported advance.

Ukrainian military authorities and independent analysts disputed the assertion immediately. The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian troops had entered parts of Kostiantynivka but had not seized the city, assessing the claim as an attempt to portray Ukrainian lines as collapsing. Mapping group DeepState also confirmed that Ukrainian units maintained defensive positions in the city. Control of the wider Donbas remains Moscow's central territorial demand in stalled negotiations with Kyiv.

Decoration and subsequent death

Following his report to the Kremlin, Russian state television praised Grunis and described him as a future marshal of victory. On 27 August, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov awarded Grunis the Gold Star, conferring the title of Hero of Russia during an official ceremony. Grunis stood first in line among officers receiving the state honour. He died in the drone attack sixteen days after the award ceremony.

Leadership losses in the command structure

Brovdi stated that Grunis was the seventh Russian military commander eliminated by his drone forces and the fourth general-level brigade commander hit by his specific unit. Ukrainian records and independent monitoring estimate that nearly 20 Russian generals have died since the invasion began in February 2022. Unconfirmed reports also pointed to the death of a three-star Russian general at a Donetsk command post in late August. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces reported successful counterattacks in northern Donetsk, where visual documentation confirmed troops secured Lyman and countered Russian claims regarding nearby areas such as Sviatohirsk.
