Russian drone double tap strikes Kryvyi Rih mall, killing at least 14 and injuring over 100
Two Russian drone strikes targeted the largest shopping complex in Kryvyi Rih on Friday afternoon, killing at least 14 people and injuring more than 100 others during rescue operations.
Two-wave drone strike hits shopping complex
On Friday afternoon, Russian forces launched a two-wave drone strike against the largest commercial shopping complex in Kryvyi Rih, located 350 kilometres southeast of Kyiv. The initial drone strike ripped through the building and ignited fires across several retail stores, sending thick smoke through the facility. Approximately 30 minutes after the first impact, a second drone crashed into the damaged structure while emergency personnel and first responders were actively evacuating wounded civilians and combating the blaze. Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Kryvyi Rih Defense Council, stated that the second attack involved a Shahed-type drone operating at extremely low altitude. Video footage documented a drone diving into the roof of the building as plumes of smoke were already rising into the sky.
Casualty figures mount during rescue operations
Casualty figures escalated rapidly as emergency crews worked through the burning debris. Early reports indicated five to six deaths, but Dnipropetrovsk regional military administrator Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed by Friday evening that at least 14 people had died. The number of wounded climbed from an initial count of 52 to at least 103 people. Among the injured were six children, with local authorities confirming that 21 people remained in serious condition, including one child. Rescue workers continued clearing rubble into the night, while municipal officials warned that the final toll could rise further as search operations progressed.

Official reactions and accusations of terrorism
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was born and raised in Kryvyi Rih, condemned the double-tap strike on his hometown as a deliberate attempt to kill emergency workers.
Attacks like these are nothing less than terrorist acts.
Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets stated that the strike occurred in broad daylight against ordinary citizens carrying out routine errands, shopping, and working.
The Russian military proves once again that civilians are a deliberate target for it in this war against Ukraine.
Zelenskyy appealed to the international community for tangible pressure against Moscow, arguing that real accountability is necessary to secure peace.
Intensified air campaign across Ukrainian cities
The strike on Kryvyi Rih came 24 hours after a nighttime missile and drone barrage hit the capital city of Kyiv, killing at least 16 civilians. Russian forces have intensified ballistic missile strikes in recent months, exploiting Ukraine's chronic shortage of Patriot air defense interceptors. Just two weeks prior, an aerial bombardment of Kyiv and its surrounding region killed 17 people, following another strike two days earlier that left nine dead. United Nations figures showed that Kyiv sustained at least 54 civilian deaths and 202 injuries during July 2026. Kryvyi Rih itself was hit just days before Friday's strike in an attack that killed two civilians and injured nearly a dozen, adding to past losses such as an April 2025 strike that killed 20 people, including nine children. In response to the intensifying air campaign, Ukrainian forces have focused recent counter-strikes on Russian oil infrastructure and logistical supply lines.
