George Russell secures pole for Austrian Grand Prix as Verstappen crashes out of Q3
Mercedes driver George Russell will start the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position after a dramatic qualifying session that saw Red Bull's Max Verstappen crash out, leaving Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to line up second and third.
Qualifying drama
George Russell claimed pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix in the final seconds of Q3, beating Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton by two tenths of a second. The session took a decisive turn when reigning champion Max Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull at turn 9 and crashed into the barriers, triggering double yellow flags. The incident froze the final laps for several drivers, including Russell's teammate Kimi Antonelli, who had held provisional pole before slowing.
Grid composition
The two Ferraris of Leclerc and Hamilton locked out the second row alongside Mercedes' Antonelli in fourth. Verstappen, despite not setting a competitive final time, starts fifth, ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris (sixth) and Oscar Piastri (seventh). Red Bull's Isack Hadjar lines up eighth, while Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad complete the top ten.
Drivers eliminated in Q2 included Gasly, Bortoleto, Bearman, Hülkenberg, Ocon, and Colapinto. The Q1 victims were Sainz, Albon, Pérez, Bottas, Alonso, and Stroll.
Investigation cleared
Russell was briefly placed under investigation for potentially speeding under yellow flags after the Verstappen crash. He argued that he had lifted off the throttle and safely navigated the incident zone; the stewards ultimately took no further action, confirming his pole position.
Race outlook
The Grand Prix begins Sunday at 15:00 local time with Russell aiming to convert pole into a victory, while Ferrari and Red Bull will push to disrupt Mercedes' plans.
