Cristiano Ronaldo accuses manager Jorge Jesus of broken promises after leaving Portugal camp
Cristiano Ronaldo released a five-page letter explaining his 30 September departure from Portugal's Nations League squad in Copenhagen, citing broken playing-time agreements with head coach Jorge Jesus.
Post-tournament discussions and initial agreements
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo published a five-page statement on 6 October 2026 explaining his departure from the national team camp. The 41-year-old forward revealed that he had drafted a farewell letter following the 2026 World Cup in the United States. During the return flight from the tournament, Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proença asked him to reconsider his international retirement. Proença also consulted Ronaldo regarding the potential appointment of Jorge Jesus, who coached the forward at Al Nassr during the previous season. Ronaldo endorsed the hiring, and the coach was subsequently appointed.
Ronaldo detailed his initial discussions with the manager regarding his international role:
After the 2026 World Cup, I prepared a letter for the Portuguese people, which I still keep, with the words I want to address to them when I permanently leave our team.
In August 2026, Ronaldo met Jorge Jesus at the Cidade do Futebol training complex to structure a physical management plan for the Nations League window. Jesus proposed that Ronaldo participate in the first match at Lisbon's Estadio Jose Alvalade and the final fixture at Porto's Estadio do Dragao, while sitting out away fixtures against Norway and Denmark. The coach suggested that Ronaldo remain in Portugal during the away leg, but the captain rejected that proposal, stating that travelling with the squad was essential for leadership. Ronaldo started the opening match at Alvalade and was substituted, passing the captain's armband to Bruno Fernandes.
The incident in Oslo and unfulfilled promises
The squad then travelled to Oslo for their Nations League match against Norway. At lunchtime on matchday, an assistant informed Ronaldo that the manager wanted to speak with him. Jesus asked whether Ronaldo could play 30 minutes, and the forward agreed despite initially expecting to rest. During the match, Ronaldo began warming up at half-time, but the coaching staff never brought him onto the pitch.
Ronaldo explained the sequence in his letter:
Everyone already knows the rest. I was warming up from half-time, I watched the minutes go by and they did not call me. The coach had not kept his word.
Ronaldo stated that the manager failed his commitments twice during the international window. He also revealed that he had agreed with Jesus on specific points the manager would present to reporters before the subsequent Denmark match. Among those agreed points was a statement where Jesus would acknowledge an error in having a player warm up without entering the match, an address Jesus did not give.
Departure from Copenhagen and future availability
Following the match in Norway, Ronaldo left the national team camp in Copenhagen on 30 September 2026, on the eve of the match against Denmark. In his statement, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates for leaving the camp abruptly and denied having ever influenced tactical decisions. He cited unkept promises and what he described as unwarranted aggressiveness from Jesus as the reasons behind his exit.
