Italian suspect surrenders at Velletri prison after fatal Tor Sapienza shooting
A 40-year-old Italian man turned himself in at Velletri prison after fatally shooting 24-year-old Raymond Asosa Agheyisi on Viale Giorgio Morandi in Rome.
Fatal shooting in Tor Sapienza
On Monday afternoon, 17 August 2026, 24-year-old Raymond Asosa Agheyisi was fatally shot in broad daylight on Viale Giorgio Morandi, located in the Tor Sapienza neighbourhood on the south-eastern outskirts of Rome. The shooter fired a single bullet from a 7.65 mm caliber pistol into Agheyisi's abdomen beneath the porticoes of a public housing complex. After being struck, the wounded victim managed to drag himself several metres along the pavement before collapsing. A passerby discovered the young man lying motionless on the ground and alerted emergency responders from the 118 service. Paramedics rushed Agheyisi to the Policlinico Casilino in critical condition. Despite emergency medical interventions, Agheyisi suffered three successive cardiac arrests and died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Wiretap leads to suspect identification
Investigators from the Rome police Squadra Mobile identified the shooter within hours of the incident. The suspect, a 40-year-old Italian national residing a few metres from the crime scene, effectively gave himself away during a telephone conversation. He spoke with an associate whose phone was already monitored under a wiretap authorized for an unrelated criminal investigation. Detectives dispatched to the suspect's residence found only his domestic partner and his brother inside the apartment. The man had fled immediately following the attack, taking the 7.65 mm handgun with him. Scientific police personnel conducted forensic examinations under the porticoes to reconstruct the physical trajectory of the confrontation.

Surrender at Velletri prison
After spending multiple days on the run to avoid capture, the 40-year-old suspect realized that law enforcement was closing in on his location. On Friday morning, he presented himself alone at the entrance of the Velletri prison facility south of Rome. Officers executed a formal detention order (fermo di indiziato di delitto) issued by the Rome public prosecutor's office on charges of voluntary homicide. Following his surrender, the suspect declined to make statements to investigators and remained in custody awaiting judicial validation of his arrest. The firearm used in the killing has not yet been recovered by authorities. The suspect already had a criminal record involving drug offences and was subject to supervised release at the time of the shooting.
Victim background and motive inquiries
Raymond Asosa Agheyisi held a clean criminal record and resided in Rome's Torre Angela district, though he maintained numerous social connections in Tor Sapienza. Born in Italy to parents of North African origin, Agheyisi was an amateur athlete who had previously competed in the Lega Calcio a 8 football league. His killing drew attention across local youth networks in the neighbourhood where the attack occurred. Investigators from the public prosecutor's office continue to examine the underlying motives behind the deadly encounter. Detectives have not established whether the two men had arranged a meeting prior to the shooting. Police inquiries currently focus on potential hypotheses ranging from drug-related score-settling to personal disputes.
