Romania issues first yellow heat advisory of 2026 as temperatures set to reach 36°C
The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has placed nearly half the country under a yellow heat advisory from June 20 to 21, with maximum temperatures rising to 36°C in some western areas.
Nationwide advisory
The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has activated a warm-weather information note from 19 June at 10:00 until 22 June at 21:00, covering most of Romania. Thermal discomfort will increase, with the west and southwest facing local heatwave conditions.
Maximum temperatures on Friday (June 19) will range from 24...25 degrees on the coast to 32 degrees in the west and southwest, then will rise, so that on Sunday and Monday values up to 34...36 degrees will be recorded.
Two yellow-code alerts for elevated temperatures have also been issued for the weekend, targeting nearly half the country.
Saturday’s yellow warning
The first yellow alert activates on Saturday, 20 June, between 12:00 and 21:00. Affected regions include Crișana, Banat, Maramureș, western and central Transylvania, and western Oltenia. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 30 to 34 degrees Celsius, with the highest readings in the Western Plain (Câmpia de Vest). The temperature-humidity index (ITU) could hit the critical threshold of 80 units in isolated spots. Fourteen counties are under the warning: Alba, Arad, Bihor, Bistrița-Năsăud, Cluj, Caraș-Severin, Hunedoara, Mehedinți, Maramureș, Mureș, Sibiu, Sălaj, Satu Mare, and Timiș.
Sunday’s intensifying heat
On Sunday, 21 June, a second yellow alert will be in force from 12:00 to 21:00, covering an even broader area: Banat, Crișana, Maramureș, Oltenia, and western and central Transylvania. Maxima will climb to 31–36°C, with the highest values in the west and southwest, where local heatwave conditions and accentuated thermal discomfort are forecast. The ITU will hit and slightly exceed 80 units.
- Weather turns warm; maximum temperatures 24–25°C on the coast, up to 32°C in the west and southwest.
- First yellow warning active in Crișana, Banat, Maramureș, western/central Transylvania and western Oltenia. Maxima 30–34°C.
- Second yellow warning active in Banat, Crișana, Maramureș, Oltenia, western/central Transylvania. Maxima 31–36°C, heat index (ITU) exceeds 80 units locally.
- End of the national warm-weather advisory; Monday may still see highs of 34–36°C in some areas.
Monday and the end of the episode
The warm-weather advisory remains active through Monday evening. ANM expects maximum temperatures again to reach 34–36°C on 22 June, particularly in the same western and southwestern counties, keeping thermal discomfort elevated. The nationwide information note expires at 21:00.
Bucharest outlook
In the capital, a weather information message for hot weather and thermal discomfort is in place for the entire 19–22 June period. Friday will bring 28–30°C maximum and 14–17°C minimum, with variable skies and light to moderate wind. Saturday and Sunday both forecast highs of 30–32°C and lows of 16–19°C; Saturday carries a slight chance of weak afternoon showers (1–4 litres per square metre), while Sunday’s shower probability remains low. Monday will warm further to 31–33°C.
Heat index and discomfort
The ITU approaching and exceeding 80 marks a level at which heat stress can affect vulnerable populations. ANM’s warnings emphasize that the thermal discomfort will be most pronounced in the west and southwest, where the combination of high temperatures and humidity creates risky conditions.
