Primoz Roglic struck by car during training, withdraws from San Sebastián and Burgos, Vuelta a España start in doubt
The four-time Vuelta a España winner revealed a large hematoma on his right thigh after being hit by a car during training, forcing his withdrawal from the Clásica San Sebastián and the Vuelta a Burgos.
Training collision
Primoz Roglic was struck by a car during a training ride a few days before the July 31 announcement. The Slovenian posted a photo on Instagram showing a large purple hematoma covering much of his right thigh, confirming the incident. No broken bones or serious lesions were reported, but the medical staff of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe opted to hold him back from racing to allow full recovery.

Races forfeited
The 36-year-old will miss the Clásica San Sebastián on August 1, where he had been expected to race alongside Remco Evenepoel for the first time in his new team. The German squad had listed Roglic on its provisional start list, but his name was absent from the final selection released on Friday. He also withdrew from the Vuelta a Burgos, a five-day stage race from August 4 to 8 that was meant to sharpen his form before the Vuelta a España. Evenepoel, the three-time champion of the Basque classic and runner-up at the 2026 Tour de France behind Tadej Pogačar, now leads the team alone at San Sebastián alongside Daniel Felipe Martinez and Giulio Pellizzari.

Vuelta a España in doubt
The collision casts a shadow over Roglic's bid for a record fifth Vuelta crown. He has not competed since finishing fourth in the Slovenian national championships on June 28, and missing these two tune-up races means he could go into the Grand Tour without any competitive miles in August. The team described the outlook as cautiously optimistic, stressing that there are no fracture concerns. The Vuelta starts in Monaco on August 22, and Roglic's immediate goal is to recover in time to take the start line.
Historic pursuit
Roglic is tied with Spain's Roberto Heras at four overall Vuelta victories, having won in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2024. A fifth win would make him the sole record-holder. His absence from the 2026 Tour de France was part of a reduced calendar designed specifically around the Vuelta, making this setback particularly ill-timed. Evenepoel, a three-time Clásica winner and recent Tour runner-up, will carry the team's ambitions in the Basque Country without him.
