Humanoid machines surpassed the human 100-meter sprint record during the opening stages of the second World Humanoid Robot Games at the Olympic Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. During the opening ceremony, a bipedal robot developed by the Chinese team X-Humanoid completed the 100-meter dash in 9.39 seconds before crashing into a trackside protective barrier. That time was eclipsed by a model named Lightning, built by Chinese smartphone maker Honor, which clocked 9.32 seconds in preliminary trials reported by Chinese state television. Both marks stand below the longstanding human record of 9.58 seconds established by Usain Bolt. According to event organizers, the sprint events are executed entirely under autonomous control, unlike certain other exhibition categories that still rely on human operators.

Scope and disciplines of the Beijing tournament
The tournament runs through 26 August 2026, gathering more than 660 teams and over 2,000 robots from 16 countries. Most registered teams originate from Chinese universities and technology companies. Organizers established a slate of 51 distinct disciplines that combine athletic events with practical service tasks. Sports competitions include the long jump, weightlifting, table tennis, and soccer, while practical trials evaluate laundry folding, package sorting, factory assembly line work, and emergency rescue operations. Engineers presented machines across varying levels of maturity, with high-speed athletic performances taking place alongside navigation errors, missteps, and balance failures during intricate physical tasks.
Progression from gait tests to endurance records
The speed achievements reflect technical progress compared to the previous edition of the games. During the 2025 competition, sprint participants were largely restricted to slow, deep-kneed jogging across flat surfaces. Current hardware incorporates improved balance algorithms and propulsion systems suited for both burst speed and distance. In April 2026, Honor's Lightning model completed a half-marathon distance of approximately 21 kilometers in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, surpassing the human best time over the same distance. Despite these gains in linear propulsion, multi-stage obstacle navigation and stairs remain challenging for many participating humanoid frames.
