Allyson, the Labrador rescue dog of the Tuscan fire brigade, has died aged 11
Allyson, a Labrador who served the Tuscan fire brigade for years, has died at age 11. She was a specialist in search and rescue under rubble and in natural disasters.
A life in service
Allyson joined the Tuscan fire brigade's canine unit as a puppy. After rigorous training she earned her certification at the National Canine School of the Fire Brigade in Volpiano in 2018, becoming a professional in searching under rubble and responding to natural calamities.
She was not just a working animal, but a true specialist in searching under rubble and in natural disaster contexts.
The bond with her handler
Throughout her career Allyson worked alongside her handler, firefighter Francesca Pagliai. Their relationship, described as symbiotic, allowed them to complete dozens of complex interventions. Pagliai, who lives in Montepulciano and works at the Arezzo command, shared a bond of absolute trust with the Labrador.
Mission at the Morandi bridge
Just a few months after completing her training, Allyson and Pagliai took part in rescue operations following the collapse of the Morandi bridge in Genoa. In areas where technology and human rescuers could not reach, Allyson's instinct and training proved essential.
Early retirement and legacy
After the Covid period, Allyson suffered a serious injury and was unable to continue search and rescue work, effectively going into early retirement. She remained at the Arezzo fire station, where her silent presence became a source of comfort.
She was the guardian of the command's morale, capable of easing tension after the most grueling and dramatic shifts. Her constant, quiet presence offered unique comfort to all the firefighters, giving kisses and cuddles.
The brigade remembers her not just as a working dog but as a colleague and a symbol of courage, dedication and gentleness.
