German referee Felix Zwayer suffers cramp during USA–Australia World Cup match, players step in to help
In stoppage time of the USA–Australia Group H match in Seattle, German referee Felix Zwayer collapsed with a left‑leg cramp. Players from both sides stretched his calf before the 45‑year‑old resumed and finished the game.
Incident
In the 93rd minute of the USA–Australia Group H match at Seattle’s Lumen Field, German referee Felix Zwayer suddenly sat down on the pitch clutching his left calf. With the temperature at 28°C under the afternoon sun, the 45‑year‑old suffered cramps that halted play. Australian midfielder Aiden O’Neill stretched Zwayer’s leg while US striker Folarin Balogun also assisted. Fourth official Katia Garcia rushed a magnesium drink across the field; Zwayer accepted it with slightly shaky hands, then stood up after a two‑minute interruption and completed the match.
You don’t want to be remembered as the one who wasn’t fit and had to be substituted. That’s not the case at all with Felix Zwayer, because he is super fit.
Reaction from experts and crowd
The 66,925 fans applauded when Zwayer rose. He left without commenting and FIFA has not yet issued a statement. On German television, former Bayern Munich player Thomas Müller joked:
Jürgen Klopp was more concerned, suggesting the incident could hurt Zwayer’s chances of officiating further matches. “I’d just assume this doesn’t contribute to that,” Klopp said on MagentaTV.Falling down is one thing, but getting up is another.
Australian frustration with decisions
Australia coach Tony Popovic was already unhappy with several calls, notably the second US goal scored by Alex Freeman. Popovic argued that Folarin Balogun was in a passive offside position and obstructed goalkeeper Patrick Beach.
His assistant Paul Okon added: “As we saw it, he hinders Beach. But VAR decided differently.” Australian football reporter Adam Peacock claimed Zwayer “guessed a lot” and the players were annoyed.Today was not the referee’s best day, I would say. We felt the tension with the officials.
Fitness debate and performance
Referee expert Patrick Ittrich defended Zwayer’s conditioning, stressing that cramp is not a fitness issue. Zwayer had earlier issued seven yellow cards – more than any referee at this World Cup before – yet maintained respect through a clear line. Ittrich described his performance as “really top” and voiced worry about how Zwayer might be thinking:
I can put myself exactly in Felix’s shoes … Hopefully the muscle doesn’t cramp again. Hopefully no long ball comes forward.
Precedent and tournament context
Despite the unusual interruption, FIFA has a history of giving injured referees further assignments. During World Cup qualifying, Argentine referee Facundo Tello was substituted because of a leg injury in the DR Congo–Jamaica playoff, yet was later chosen to officiate Canada vs Bosnia‑Herzegovina at the tournament itself. The US win, sealed by a Cameron Burgess own goal and Freeman’s strike, means both co‑hosts – USA and Mexico – are through to the round of 16.
