Four arrested in mafia-style bombing of journalist Sigfrido Ranucci's home
The Carabinieri arrested four people in the provinces of Naples and Avellino on June 30, suspected of carrying out the October 2025 bomb attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci's home. The alleged executors are believed to have acted on behalf of unknown instigators.
The attack
On the evening of October 16, 2025, an explosive device detonated in front of the home of television journalist Sigfrido Ranucci in Torvaianica, a district of Pomezia near Rome. The blast destroyed two of Ranucci's parked cars and damaged the perimeter wall of the property. No injuries were reported, but the force of the explosion, set off in a residential area, posed a serious risk to public safety. The bomb was constructed using "gelatina da cava," an obsolete but highly destructive mining explosive.
The investigation
A cross-analysis of public and private video surveillance, along with phone records from the cell site, enabled investigators to reconstruct the preparatory, execution, and subsequent phases of the crime. A Fiat 500 X, rented in Campania, was identified on a state highway camera several kilometres from the scene. Its journey to Rome and rapid return immediately after the attack matched the movements of cell phones used by the suspects, including during an earlier reconnaissance visit to the area.
Indicative of an illicit supply network for explosive material.
The arrests
In the early hours of June 30, 2026, Carabinieri from the provincial command of Rome, supported by local units, executed arrest warrants in the provinces of Naples and Avellino. Four individuals are now in custody: three in prison and one under house arrest. They face charges of possession, carrying in a public place, and use of an explosive device, as well as threats and criminal damage, aggravated by acting as part of a group of more than five people and employing mafia-style methods.
The search for instigators
Prosecutors from the Anti-Mafia Directorate believe the four men were executants acting on a specific mandate from third parties who remain unidentified. The alleged instigators are thought to have provided funds, dedicated phone SIM cards, legal assistance, and plans for a possible escape abroad. The investigation has also uncovered attempts to obstruct justice, including the destruction of SIM cards and environmental sweeps to foil potential wiretaps, as the hunt for the masterminds continues.
