Spectator killed after being hit by rally car at Asturias event
A 38-year-old spectator died on Saturday after being struck by a competing car during the VIII Rallysprint Carreño in Asturias, Spain. The driver and co-driver were injured and taken to hospital.
The accident
The incident occurred on Saturday, 4 July 2026, during the eighth edition of the Rallysprint Carreño, the third round of the Asturias Rallysprint Championship. The car, driven by Antonio García, left the road at kilometre 6 of the CE-2 road in the parish of Logrezana, Carreño. The spectator, a man from Gijón, was taking photographs at a change of gradient, a location prohibited for the public, according to the organisers.
Reports on the exact time vary: some sources place the accident shortly before 13:30 local time, while one report says it happened around 12:15. The vehicle struck the spectator, who became trapped underneath. Emergency services, including a mobile ICU, firefighters and a medical helicopter, were dispatched immediately.
Casualties and response
The spectator, aged 38 (one source gives 37), died almost instantly at the scene. Both the driver and the co-driver were injured and evacuated to the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (HUCA) in Oviedo. The Guardia Civil’s traffic unit and the Unidad de Investigación de Siniestros Viales (UNIS) have taken over the investigation.
We deeply regret what happened today at our event. We can be proud of working for this sport and its fans, but events like today’s are hard to take.
Rally suspended
The Federación de Automovilismo del Principado de Asturias (FAPA) confirmed the cancellation of the rally following the fatality. The event, organised by Escudería Candás Competición, covered a total of around 80 kilometres, of which 38 were timed stages. It had drawn dozens of teams and numerous spectators along the route.
Investigation
Authorities are now working to determine the exact causes of the crash and any potential liabilities. The organisers and the local council have expressed their condolences.
