Jon Rahm misses US Open cut after worst major round as Wyndham Clark leads at Shinnecock Hills
Jon Rahm signed for an eight-over 78 in the second round, missing the cut by six shots after starting the day bogey-free and in contention.
Wyndham Clark builds commanding lead
Wyndham Clark followed his opening 64 with a 69 on Friday to reach seven under par at Shinnecock Hills. The American holds a four-shot advantage over Matthew Fitzpatrick, Xander Schauffele, Sam Stevens, and Tom Kim, who are all at three under. Clark carded three birdies and two bogeys on a day when the tough New York layout punished most of the field.

Rahm's dramatic Friday collapse
Jon Rahm completed his weather-delayed first round early on Friday morning with a bogey-free 68, becoming the first player in 22 years to navigate Shinnecock Hills without a dropped shot in an opening round. He started his second round shortly after 6:35 a.m. with hopes of contending.
Then everything unravelled. A missed short putt on the 4th hole triggered a sequence of errors. After a lone birdie at the par-5 5th, Rahm dropped three shots in the next four holes and then suffered four consecutive bogeys followed by a double bogey between holes 12 and 16. He signed for a 78, eight over par, his worst score relative to par in any major championship.
From that solid Rahm of the first round to a golfer sunk as rarely seen hours later.
- Completes suspended first round with a bogey-free 68, only clean card of the day
- Starts second round
- Bogey on 4, birdie on 5
- Collapse: four bogeys and a double bogey from holes 12 to 16
- Signs for 78 (+8), finishes at +6 to miss the cut
Spanish contingent almost wiped out
Only Ángel Hidalgo survived the 36-hole cut among the four Spaniards in the field. The Malaga native posted a second-round 74 to sit at three over par, tied for 49th place. David Puig finished at nine over and Rocco Repetto, making his major debut, at 17 over par, both well outside the cut line.
A major to forget for Rahm
This is Rahm's second missed cut in his last seven major appearances, after also failing to reach the weekend at the 2024 PGA Championship. The 2021 US Open champion had arrived in New York in good form, with two LIV Golf wins and a runner-up finish at the PGA Championship a month earlier. The abrupt departure marks a low point in his 10th anniversary year since his first major start.
