Earthquake swarm rattles Prokopi, Euboea, with tremors reaching magnitude 4.1
The Geodynamic Institute of Athens recorded a 4.1-magnitude quake Tuesday morning, followed by a cluster of smaller tremors in the evening and early Wednesday near Prokopi, Euboea. No damage or injuries were reported.
Morning shock
A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck northern Euboea early on Tuesday, June 23. The tremor was recorded at 06:55 local time, with an epicenter 6 to 7 kilometers northwest or southwest of Prokopi, depending on the source. The focal depth was estimated at 15.2 to 15.4 kilometers. The quake was felt across the region.
Evening sequence
After 22:00 on Tuesday, a rapid series of smaller earthquakes shook the same area. The Geodynamic Institute reported a magnitude 3.0 tremor at 22:05 (7 km southwest of Prokopi, depth 5 km), followed three minutes later by a stronger magnitude 3.6–3.7 event with an epicenter between 2 and 4 km south-southwest of Prokopi at a shallow depth of 0.6 to 5 km. A subsequent magnitude 2.4 tremor was also recorded at the 7 km southwest location.
- Magnitude 4.1 earthquake, 6–7 km NW/SW of Prokopi, depth 15.2–15.4 km
- Magnitude 3.0 tremor, 7 km SW of Prokopi, depth 5 km
- Magnitude 3.6–3.7 tremor, 2–4 km S/SW of Prokopi, depth 0.6–5 km
- Magnitude 2.4 aftershock, 7 km SW of Prokopi
- Magnitude 3.6 earthquake, 8 km SW of Prokopi, depth 5.0 km
Overnight tremor
Another earthquake of magnitude 3.6 (one report listed 3.5) occurred at 01:19 on Wednesday, June 24. Its epicenter was placed 8 km southwest of Prokopi, with a focal depth of 5.0 km. This event was part of the ongoing swarm.
Assessment
All magnitudes come from the automatic solutions of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens. No damage or injuries have been reported following any of the tremors. The sequence is consistent with typical seismic activity in the region.
