LFP moves PSG season opener against Rennes to Roazhon Park after heatwave damages pitch
The Ligue 1 match between Paris Saint-Germain and Stade Rennais on 23 August has been reversed to Roazhon Park after high summer temperatures left the Parc des Princes turf unplayable.
Venue switch to Roazhon Park
The French football league (LFP) announced on Wednesday that Paris Saint-Germain will play their opening Ligue 1 fixture against Stade Rennais away in Brittany rather than at the Parc des Princes. The match remains scheduled for Sunday, 23 August at 20:45, but will now take place at Roazhon Park. The fixture reversal was enacted after an inspection confirmed that extreme heat damage left the Parisian pitch unsafe for competitive action. Under the revised schedule, the return fixture on the weekend of 6 March is slated to take place in Paris, though Rennes has reportedly explored holding both fixtures at home.
The current condition of the pitch does not ensure player safety. Meeting on 19 August, the competitions commission decided that the match cannot take place at the Parc des Princes.
Heatwave damage and failed alternatives
Paris Saint-Germain first notified the league of the degrading surface on Monday, 17 August, after successive summer heatwaves struck the Paris region. While the turf had withstood earlier temperature spikes, hot weather during the previous week caused rapid and severe deterioration. On the morning of 19 August, a specialized consulting firm and a league delegate conducted an on-site evaluation of the playing area, finding it unplayable.
The latest heatwave, following successive and exceptional heatwaves that affected the Paris region this summer, greatly accelerated the degradation of the Parc des Princes pitch, today particularly damaged.
Before agreeing to reverse the fixture, Parisian club officials considered importing replacement turf slabs from the Netherlands on short notice. That proposal was dropped due to concerns over player welfare and footing stability. With Paris Saint-Germain unable to secure an alternative backup stadium in the capital region, Stade Rennais provided official guarantees to host the contest at their home ground.

Logistical fallout and ticketing
The late venue alteration, announced four days before kickoff, presents considerable travel and ticketing challenges for supporters. Paris Saint-Germain confirmed that instructions regarding compensation and ticket validity will be communicated to ticket holders as soon as possible. Prior to the switch, away section tickets made available on the Stade Rennais ticketing portal had sold out within one minute. The league and Paris Saint-Germain publicly expressed gratitude to Stade Rennais, the Rennes municipality, and the Ille-et-Vilaine prefecture for organizing the match at short notice.
Early season schedule and squad status
Paris Saint-Germain will not play at the Parc des Princes until Friday, 4 September at 21:05, when they are scheduled to host AS Monaco on the third matchday of Ligue 1. Club ground staff have prepared an emergency turf replacement plan to ensure the stadium is ready for that fixture. On the pitch, Paris Saint-Germain enter Sunday's match without Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes, who received a three-match suspension following a red card in Sunday's 1-0 Trophée des Champions defeat against Lens. The trip to Rennes represents the club's third consecutive fixture away from Paris, following the Lens match and a 2-1 UEFA Super Cup victory over Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria.
