Jaime Faria and wild card Tiago Torres both reach Estoril Open quarterfinals for first time in tournament's current era
Jaime Faria defeated Gonzalo Bueno 6-2, 6-4, while wild card Tiago Torres stunned world No. 30 Alejandro Tabilo to put two Portuguese players in the last eight for the first time in the current Estoril Open.
Portuguese duo makes history
Jaime Faria and Tiago Torres both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Millennium Estoril Open on Thursday, marking the first time two Portuguese players have reached this stage in the tournament's current era at the Clube de Ténis do Estoril. Faria, the world No. 88, dispatched Peruvian qualifier Gonzalo Bueno 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 16 minutes. Hours earlier, wild card Torres, ranked 427th, stunned third seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile, the world No. 30, with a double 5-4 victory in his maiden ATP Tour event. The last time two Portuguese men reached the same ATP quarterfinals was in 2016, when João Sousa and Gastão Elias did so in consecutive weeks at Bastad and Umag. In 2010, Frederico Gil and Rui Machado also achieved the feat when the Estoril Open was held at the Jamor complex.
Faria's commanding performance
Faria's win over Bueno was his fourth career ATP quarterfinal, but his first on European soil after previous runs in Rio de Janeiro (2025 and 2026) and Santiago (2025). The 88th-ranked Portuguese controlled the match from the baseline, avenging compatriot Tiago Pereira's first-round loss to Bueno. Faria becomes the fifth Portuguese to reach the Estoril quarters since the tournament moved to its current venue in 2015, following João Sousa, João Domingues, Nuno Borges, and now Torres.
Torres's dream debut
Torres, a 24-year-old from Lisbon playing his first ATP tournament, had already beaten Nikoloz Basilashvili in the opening round. Against Tabilo, he delivered what he called the best match of his life.

Other last-16 results
Top seed Andrey Rublev, the world No. 14, needed only 59 minutes to dismiss lucky loser Timofey Skatov 6-1, 6-1. The Russian, who won the Bastad title the previous week, will face France's Luca van Assche in the quarterfinals. Van Assche, ranked 78th, eliminated 2017 champion Pablo Carreño Busta 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, ending the last former winner's presence in the draw after Casper Ruud (2023) and Hubert Hurkacz (2024) withdrew and Stan Wawrinka (2013) was earlier knocked out. Second seed Luciano Darderi of Italy, ranked 21st, cruised past Spain's Pedro Martínez 6-0, 6-1 in a match briefly suspended due to technical issues. Nuno Borges, Portugal's top-ranked player, fell to Argentina's Román Andrés Burruchaga in the second round, later lamenting that he felt "apathetic" and "without any magic on the ball."
Quarterfinal matchups
Faria will next face Darderi, while Torres awaits his opponent. Rublev meets van Assche in the top half. Faria is also still alive in doubles alongside Borges, keeping Portuguese interest high across both draws.
