Nuno Borges and Jaime Faria Advance to Cincinnati Masters Round of 16
Nuno Borges defeated Andrey Rublev in straight sets while qualifier Jaime Faria came from behind against Adam Walton, placing two Portuguese players in the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters.
Borges ends losing streak against Rublev
Nuno Borges, the 29-year-old from Maia ranked 47th in the ATP rankings, secured a place in the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Russia's Andrey Rublev on Tuesday. The match concluded in one hour and 12 minutes in Ohio. Borges had lost all five of his previous encounters against Rublev, the tournament's 13th seed and world number 18, managing to win only one set across their two most recent meetings. Borges, who delayed his entry into professional tennis to compete in the American collegiate circuit, stated that the conditions reminded him of his time in college and noted that he felt comfortable despite past struggles against the Russian. The victory marked Borges's third win of the season against a player ranked inside the world top 20. Immediately following the match, Borges wrote the words "Portugal on fire" on the television camera lens.
It reminds me of my college days.
Faria rallies from behind to advance
Later on Tuesday, 79th-ranked Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria joined Borges in the round of 16 after defeating Australia's Adam Walton 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in a match lasting two hours and 11 minutes. Faria, who entered the main draw through the qualifying rounds and eliminated world number six Ben Shelton in the previous round, overcame a 4-6, 1-4 deficit. Faria lost the first set after being broken in the tenth game, and quickly fell behind 0-3 and 1-4 in the second set after conceding an early service break. The Portuguese player responded by winning five consecutive games, earning two service breaks, and converted his first set point to take the set 6-4. In the third set, Faria broke in the third game before Walton broke back in the fourth. The set proceeded on serve to a tiebreak, where Faria led 3-0, weathered a recovery to 4-3, and claimed the final three points with two mini-breaks to win 7-3.

Round of 16 matchups set for Wednesday
Both Portuguese players are scheduled to contest their round-of-16 matches on Wednesday. Faria will face Italy's Lorenzo Musetti, the tournament's 10th seed and world number 15, who reached the last 16 by defeating American Michael Zheng, ranked 110th, by scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Borges will face American Brandon Nakashima, who is ranked 22nd and seeded 27th. Nakashima advanced after defeating fourth seed and world number seven Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, a contest in which the American saved three match points before securing victory.
I hope it inspires a lot, we are still a football country, we try to put a little more tennis into our culture.
Consecutive Masters runs for Portugal
The dual progression marks the first time Portuguese tennis has placed two players in the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters. For Borges, the result represents his second consecutive round-of-16 appearance at an ATP Masters 1000 event, having reached the same stage nearly two weeks earlier in Montreal, Canada, where his run ended. Faria's progression through qualifying and successive wins against Montreal champion Shelton and Walton extends his run into the final 16 of the Ohio tournament.
